Of course this was a great, and to my mind very funny, account of the obscenity trial of Lady Chatterley‘s Lover. I laughed out loud at Bedford‘s aside about the people who were passionately concerned about the outcome noting “... The French, or members of other Latin nations, did not participate”. Loved this 80 page account of an important moment in the history of literature and class distinctions in the UK! #MtTbr book 5 #LitsyPartyOfOne

“An American writer, who was next to me, said, ‘why this is going to be the upper-middle-class English version of our Tennessee Monkey Trial.‘” Sybille Bedford reporting from The Crown v. Penguin Books Limited 20 October -2 November 1960.

Leniverse What is the Tennessee Monkey Trial?! 6y
Leniverse Nvm I googled it! 6y
Booksnchill @leniverse unfortunately I am quite familiar with it being a TN lawyer myself. One of my early trials was at the Rhea-Dayton courthouse where the Scopes trial took place and where they have a museum dedicated to it in the basement. We seem to reinact that trial in various forms every few years- and not in a good way!🙈🙉🙊 6y
Leniverse Yes, I was thinking that there are a few other states in the US that could use another trial like that. Except that I'd be slightly worried about the outcomes! 😕 6y

#SundayMorningCoffeeMug I have spent a full 2 days reading larger books for #LitsyPartyOfOne and decided to knock out an 80 page book this morning that has been on my #MtTbr list. This cover grabs you right🤣🤣🤣 It is the true story of the “most obscene court case in British History” the obscenity trial of Lady Chatterly‘s Lover- the title quote from a statement by the Prosecution. I think this will be fun! Happy Sunday Littens! #Nonfiction

DivineDiana I think so too! 😀 6y
Booksnchill @divinediana it is so weird when you realize this obscenity trial tookplace in 1960! 6y

This is another short book, and is about what it says on the cover! It is really easy to read and interesting to learn about the trial of a book in the 1960s, definitely recommend if you are just looking for some light non-fiction reading 📖 #CoverLove #DHLawrence #LadyChatterly #Trial #Law
