Surviving Canada
Surviving Canada: Indigenous Peoples Celebrate 150 Years of Betrayal | Myra Tait, Kiera L. Ladner
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Surviving Canada: Indigenous Peoples Celebrate 150 Years of Betrayal is a collection of elegant, thoughtful, and powerful reflections about Indigenous Peoples' complicated, and often frustrating, relationship with Canada, and how--even 150 years after Confederation--the fight for recognition of their treaty and Aboriginal rights continues. Through essays, art, and literature, Surviving Canada examines the struggle for Indigenous Peoples to celebrate their cultures and exercise their right to control their own economic development, lands, water, and lives. The Indian Act, Idle No More, and the legacy of residential schools are just a few of the topics covered by a wide range of elders, scholars, artists, and activists. Contributors include Mary Eberts, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Leroy Little Bear.

Pickpick

Essential reading for all settler Canadians. Ladner and Tait have assembled a challenging collection of essays (and the occasional piece of poetry or fiction) by contributors from many different Nations, with many perspectives on issues like reconciliation, self-determination, and the contrast between Canadian and Indigenous law.

This is now on my auto-recs list. #canada150

I've made this my primary read in the hopes I can finish it by the end of the week and get it back in the library's New Releases section all the quicker. More people need to come across, and read, this book. #canada150

I've got almost no clue what I'll read in September, but I AM glad I found SURVIVING CANADA on my library's New Releases stand. It's exactly the kind of #canada150 reading I want to do.

I also hope to reread my beloved SKIP BEAT! this month, and I'm excited to finally dig into the X-Men bits of Secret Wars. #septembermostanticipated #fallintobooks

Sace @xicanti I've been sort of avoiding it. I plow through them so fast and then I'm sad when it's over and I don't have the next one. 7y
xicanti @RestlessFickleBookSlut I relate to this idea so hard. 7y
Sace @xicanti it's about my only complaint for Manga. 7y
