Stargate
Stargate | Pauline Gedge

In the earliest years of the history of the universe, the Worldmaker has turned against his creations with unaccountable malice. One by one the ruling sun lords of each solar system have fallen, succumbing to the lure of forbidden knowledge. The terrible punishment for their crime is isolation—the Gates connecting their worlds to the rest of the cosmos are sealed off. Their innocence lost, their civilizations hopelessly corrupted, the immortal sun people are condemned to languish with their subjects in an eternity of solitude. With courageous and often desperate measures the remaining sun lords now prepare themselves and their subjects for a battle unlike any they have ever imagined. The final struggle has begun. Unfolding with epic power, Stargate is conceived with a richness, subtlety, and depth that set it apart from most fantasy fiction. And like Pauline Gedge's critically acclaimed historical novels, it is written with a vividness that is unforgettable. First published in 1982 but long out of print, Stargate is destined to be rediscovered and treasured as a major classic of fantasy literature.

Another bunny reading buddy helped me decide to bail on STARGATE at around 25%. I like Gedge‘s prose style and I admire her aim to examine how leaders might falter, but the mythic and the personal are out of balance. This is about big, sweeping choices on worlds with no real concept of sin. The characters don‘t shine half so bright as the ideas.

Gezemice Bunny! We have a lot of them in our area, too. We love to go and count them... 4y
xicanti @Gezemice I get attached to all the ones that come into my yard. They used to raise the cutest babies under my deck, but they nixed that arrangement after my dog moved in. 4y

Sometimes I love Pauline Gedge‘s work; sometimes I find it a bit of a slog. It‘s too early to say which side this‘ll fall on, but as of page 40 the prose is lovely and the conflict feels satisfyingly layered. I‘m hopeful.

Mehso-so

I got this book because I love the show. This it what it‘s supposed to be based off. The only similarity is that they have portals that can take them to other planets. So, as a reference to the show- I was disappointed. But as a stand-alone book of its genre, it was worth reading.
