Riptide Summer
Riptide Summer | Lisa Freeman

The year is 1973, and Nani is firmly established as one of the top girls in the State Beach lineup. She’s looking forward to a long, relaxing summer of days spent in the sun with her surfer boyfriend, and to secret nights with Rox, the lineup’s queen supreme. But when surf god Nigel breaks her heart, and Rox reveals a secret that tears their friendship--and the lineup--apart, Nani is left to pick up the pieces. If she can’t recruit new Honey Girls to the lineup, the friends will lose their reputation as the beach’s top babes. With the summer spiraling out of control, Nani starts to question everything she’s always believed about how to rule the beach. Maybe it’s time to leave the rules behind, starting with the most important one: Girls don’t surf.

Panpan

Ugh. The characters were flat / one-dimensional, the plot was aimless, and the writing felt disjointed. I know this is supposed to be realistic historical fiction, but I just didn't like this foray into sexist 70s California surfer culture. There is some feminist content, but the girls' emphasis on physical beauty and judging each other on their looks is never challenged. Plus, for a book described as bisexual, it actually feels pretty bi-erasing.

I'm trying to figure out whether my difficulty in sinking into this book is because I haven't read the first one or that the author's style just doesn't jive with me... #QueerBooks #QueerYA

This was a beautiful and empowering second installment to Honey Girl! I loved it and can't wait to see if there is more. Nani is such a badass who is finally coming to terms with her love of surfing and her love of women.
