Abandon | Meg Cabot

New from #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, a dark, fantastical story about this world . . . and the underworld. Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back. But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid. Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most. But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

There‘s some problems...Insta-Love, BAD-BOY-SO-HOT-MUST-SAVE, “not like other girls/super-special-and-important-FOR-NO-REASON main female, underdeveloped characters (and plot)...I didn‘t *hate* this, but I don‘t want to hand it over to Zoey (12 yo) anytime soon. I know it‘s Hades/Persephone retold, but Lore Olympus does this with more success. I ordered the rest of the trilogy (used) to see if it gets better. Stay tuned.

Emilymdxn Meg Cabot was my favourite author on the planet when I was a tween, I wonder what it‘d be like reading her books now though I‘d probably notice a lot I didn‘t before. If I saw too much ‘not like other girls‘ my eyes might roll all the way back in my head 4y
AshleyHoss820 @Emilymdxn I think that‘s just it! I‘m not a young adult and I‘m definitely far too cynical for romances (which has been true no matter what age I am) so I‘m not the target audience for this! I don‘t like the “maybe if you were nicer to him he wouldn‘t act that way” crap. Or Mary Sue characters. It‘s okay to be unique, not okay to be in comparison to (better than) others. I‘ve heard this isn‘t her best work, though! I‘ll try her again and see! 😊 4y

I dunno. Maybe I‘m a seasoned (nice way of saying old) woman, but I hate the “not like other girls/no one like her/isn‘t she so different” trope...🤷🏻‍♀️😂 (I‘m reading this for my Adolescent Lit class...)

BarbaraBB I know what you mean and you‘re not old 👵🏼😃 4y
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB Thank you!! 😄 Once I made it past the halfway mark, the book started improving...a little...😄😊 4y
Clare-Dragonfly It‘s a sexist trope! You‘re right to hate it! 4y
AshleyHoss820 @Clare-Dragonfly Exactly! Hey, let‘s pit women against each other, that‘ll be fun! 🙄 (edited) 4y

Don‘t ever let them tell you that you‘re too stupid to do something. I‘m not saying it‘s going to be easy for you. Maybe you‘re going to have to work for it a little harder than other people, which I know isn‘t fair. But that doesn‘t mean you should just give up.

Tav Big fan of Meg from way back. 8y

Read the whole trilogy in about 2 days. Not awful, but some parts were confusing and annoying.
