Starling: Love in Los Angeles | Erin McRae and Racheline Maltese
8 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
Hollywoods newest star, 21-year-old J. Alex Cook never wanted to be famous, he just wanted to get out of Indiana. When he hooks up with Paul, a writer on a hit TV show, Alex is thrown into a web of relationships involving friends, lovers, and everything in between. Forced to figure out what it means to live and love in the public eye, Alexs quest to find his own happily ever after will make you believe love is possible... even in Los Angeles. Please be aware, this is a high-heat, high-angst romance and includes characters with a past history of self-harm. This title was previously published by Torquere Press. This is a newly updated and revised edition.

I enjoyed STARLING and recommend it to folks in search of realistically complicated love stories, but this is one of those cases where the things that bugged me stand out more than the things I loved about the book. Most importantly, all the action takes place during gaps in the characters' busy working lives, which throws the pacing off and makes the timeline tough to grasp. I WANTED the missing work-related bits, too, as acting delights me.

None of my local thrift stores had enough dog sweater-worthy yarn to cover a Cavalier. Sadness.

I drowned my sorrows with a Simply Sausage at Tim Horton's and some more of STARLING. I'm enjoying it, but it feels way longer than 300 pages and I'll be glad to finish it tonight.

The rain more or less cleared off, so I went out in search of yarn for a dog sweater. Since there was a McDonald's along the way, I stopped in for a free Americano and a reading break.

I'm seriously frustrated with the number of days it's taken me to hit 53% with this great, short book, so I'm gonna hunker down and read the fuck out of it on this rainy Saturday.

I sat by this awesome waterfall while I read some more of STARLING. A couple other people had the same idea, though I'm pretty sure they were reading different books.

Amanda23 Beautiful spot! 6y
xicanti @Amanda23 it's gorgeous! There are paths and benches on either side of the waterfall, plus a reflecting pool right at the top of the slope. One of the other readers sat on the edge with her feet in it. 6y

Liatrek So pretty❤️Where is this lovely spot? 6y
xicanti @Liatrek it's King's Park in Winnipeg, MB. The park's fitted out with this lovely waterfall terrace, a pagoda, the memorial labyrinth, a couple of bowers, sports fields, an off-leash dog park, and tons of trails. 6y

Tonight's plan, with some more X-FACTOR thrown in for good measure.

Dying laughing. I absolutely love the conversations between Alex and Liam, so much funny at kind of an awkward time for both characters. Also, regardless of relationship status, I adore their friendship. It's the kind I'm sure we all have, that our spouse doesn't understand, but is that one person who will always tell us the truth and who we trust with the deepest parts of ourselves.
