Sting-Ray Afternoons
Sting-Ray Afternoons: A Memoir | Steve Rushin
8 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
A wild and bittersweet memoir of a classic '70s childhood It's a story of the 1970s. Of a road trip in a wood-paneled station wagon, with the kids in the way-back, singing along to the Steve Miller Band. Brothers waking up early on Saturday mornings for five consecutive hours of cartoons and advertising jingles that they'll be humming all day. A father-one of 3M's greatest and last eight-track-salesman fathers-traveling across the country on the brand-new Boeing 747, providing for his family but wanting nothing more than to get home. It's Steve Rushin's story: of growing up within a '70s landscape populated with Bic pens, Mr. Clean and Scrubbing Bubbles, lightsabers and those oh-so-coveted Schwinn Sting-Ray bikes. Sting-Ray Afternoons paints an utterly fond, psychedelically vibrant, laugh-out-loud-funny portrait of an exuberant decade. With sidesplitting commentary, Rushin creates a vivid picture of a decade of wild youth, cultural rebirth, and the meaning of parental, brotherly, sisterly, whole lotta love.

If you are a child of the 70s, this memoir will probably resonate with you like it did me. It was a serious walk down memory lane for me although there was ultimately little of a narrative here. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2021/10/review-sting-ray-afternoons-by-steve.ht...

This is a great read if you grew up in the 1970s, I have spent a cold afternoon under a blanket laughing out loud for most of it and crying at the end.

RaimeyGallant Nice review. :) And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you're interested. :) 6y

Audio book. Fun, nostalgic read. Makes me crave the easy-breezy summer days of being a kid, growing up in the 70s. Loved this memoir completely!!!

I saw that only around 40% rated this book a pick. Is that because the ones who didn't like it didn't grow up in the 1970s like me? This outfit was my favorite from 1975, laying on my table that I got around the same time. I'm three years younger than the author, so I could remember almost all the references to the era he wrote about and the book was really fun read for me.

Totally selected for the cover. Then I realized I adored the author's contributions in Sports Illustrated. Finally got around to enjoying a delightful memoir of being a kid in the Midwest of the 1970s. ❤️
