"A diverse and engrossing cast of characters...provocative, diverting." --Chicago Tribune Emma wakes up one morning to an apocalyptic world. The cozy existence she shares with her grandmother, an eccentric retired actress known to all as Madam, has been shattered: there's no post, no telephone, no radio - and an American warship sits in the harbor. As the two women piece together clues about the 'friendly' military occupation on their doorstep, family, friends and neighbours gather round to protect their heritage. In this chilling novel of the future, Daphne du Maurier explores the implications of a political, economic and military alliance between Britain and the United States.

With a setting in 1972, this novel is beyond brilliant❣️Emma wakes up one morning in her Cornwall home to no phone service, no electricity, and American fighter planes are in the harbor to implement a melding of US and UK: USUK! Reminiscent of Nazi rule, the homeowners resist—great story/characters! I think du Maurier was a proponent of liberty, small government, & 1st amendment. #bookspinbingo #AAM2021

Absolutely brilliant. As always.
But unsettling due to current times...

Obviously superbly written and excellent story.
But rather terrifying that it was published in 1972 and details the UK separating from Europe and the USA governing to form a coalition... kind of currently relevant...

Another view of Lord Buckethead, doing his best dab.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Bookmarked an article about this lunacy earlier today. I really need to read it so I can figure out what in the world is going on. 7y
Libby1 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk - yep, for a history and poli sci major from America who lives in Northern Ireland (as an unlikeable NI party is now a major player in the new government, sadly), this is like candy to me. Enjoy! 7y
BarbaraJean Aw, that poor guy standing behind Lord Buckethead's dab... 7y
Libby1 I know @BarbaraJean . But the whole thing is FAB-U-LOUS! 7y

While the UK election results have us all scratching our heads, I love that I live in a country where candidates running against the Prime Minister could include someone from the Monster Raving Loony Party, Lord Buckethead (in the tall, black helmet), and someone dressed up as Elmo who only got 3 votes.

About the book - it imagines a Brexit scenario in which the US invades the U.K... 😬

I bought it after Brexit but it's still in Mount TBR.

Verity I was up all night working on the election results last night and it was just... boggling. Great night to be up for though. 7y
Libby1 Wow, @Verity . We stayed up until 4:00 AM watching the results. What was your role last night (if you don't mind me asking)? 7y
Verity I was working on the BBC election programmes - writing stories for the presenters and reporters to read. Lots of fun, but I still haven't had enough sleep! 7y

Libby1 That sounds amazing, @Verity . I need to get some sleep now, too! I hope you get caught up on your rest soon. 😊 7y
AlaMich I think we have a Lord Buckethead here too 🤔 Oh, right, he's the president 😩😩 7y
Anna40 Hilarious! Lord Buckethead and Elmo 😂... 7y
Libby1 @AlaMich - no kidding. 😬 @Anna40 - poor 3 vote Elmo. He kept taking his costume head off during the speeches, too. Hilarious. 7y
BarbaraJean Oh, goodness, this is fantastic. 😂Also: the Monster Raving Loony Party!! I remember them from when I lived in England as a child... I had no idea they were still going! 7y
Libby1 They seem to be going strong, @BarbaraJean , in a monstery ravey loony kind of way. 7y
