It's My Country Too
It's My Country Too: Women's Military Stories from the American Revolution to Afghanistan | Tracy Crow, Jerri Bell
5 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
This inspiring anthology is the first to convey the rich experiences and contributions of women in the American military in their own words--from the Revolutionary War to the present wars in the Middle East. Serving with the Union Army during the Civil War as a nurse, scout, spy, and soldier, Harriet Tubman tells what it was like to be the first American woman to lead a raid against an enemy, freeing some 750 slaves. Busting gender stereotypes, Josette Dermody Wingo enlisted as a gunner's mate in the navy in World War II to teach sailors to fire Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns. Marine Barbara Dulinsky recalls serving under fire in Saigon during the Tet Offensive of 1968, and Brooke King describes the aftermath of her experiences outside the wire with the army in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In excerpts from their diaries, letters, oral histories, and pension depositions--as well as from published and unpublished memoirs--generations of women reveal why and how they chose to serve their country, often breaking with social norms, even at great personal peril.

Choice: Listen to Trump's one propaganda speech about his stupid wall and count the lies, or try to finish the last 87 pages of this. Not a hard choice really, but a very apt title. I feel like our country is adrift, being pulled this way and that by two political parties more interested in gaining/maintaining power than helping the American people.

I don't usually do actual tbr piles because I have shelves full waiting to be read. Since I am trying to cut down on my book buying, I thought I would try making a tbr pile as a goal. Each time I want to begin a new book I will have to consult my pile first. I included many different types since I am a mood reader. Wish me luck!

charl08 Nice idea. Good luck! 6y
Slajaunie Good luck! I will keep buying despite my overwhelming tbr pile. 6y
bookishbitch Thanks @charl08 @Slajaunie . I've also thought maybe buying 1 for every 10 read might slow me down too. We'll see how it goes. @tpixie It does doesn't it? 6y

I picked up my other special order book today. (It doesn't count as a purchase if you have a gift card right?) One of the authors is a former Marine. Those are my boots from when I was in the Corps. They carried me through boot camp and beyond. I'm really looking forward to digging into this one. #semperfi

Struggling with this ARC and I hate when this happens. This isnt even a bad book the way it's formatted though doesn't do it any favors. It introduces a person and then you read a small section of their memoir/diary/journal/news article and then you jump into the next one. It feels slightly disconnected at times and I'm having to take frequent breaks... must change how I read this...

Starting this today! Very eager to read about these women's story. Give credit where credit is due. Women have always served in one capacity or another, officially or unofficially.

Did anyone else know that Louisa May Alcott was an Army contract nurse? I sure didnt...
