Malkasians stunning landscapes and depictions of nature, gestural character nuance, and sophisticated storytelling are on display in her latest graphic novel. For a thousand years, the unfinished dreams?sex fantasies, murder plots, wishful thinking?from the City Across the Sea came to Echo Fjord to find sanctuary. Emerging from the soil, they took bodily form and wandered the land, gently guided by the fjord folk. But recently they've stopped coming, and Eartha wants solve the mystery. Without thought or hesitation?the city isnt on any map, or in anyones memory?she ventures into the limitless waters, hoping to find the City.

Lindy @LitsyGetsGraphic Did you scroll down to see my review? I was happy to see it‘s been nominated for an Eisner this year. 6y
LitsyGetsGraphic @Lindy yes I did and you did a great job to point the book‘s highlights ❤️ I wanted to write down about a nomination, but had to sacrifice this for the book‘s description (451 symbols is not enough for this book) 6y

My @bookriot Read Harder 2018 book for “a comic written and drawn by the same person”. It was quite the ride!

A unique and dreamy world; memorable and endearing characters; gorgeous art; an adventure quest into a dangerous place—Malkasian gets all the elements right in this moving graphic novel. I felt completely immersed in this fantasy/fable for adults. Muted tones; a hefty 255 oversized pages.

The same-sex relationship between Eartha and Maybelle is unremarked upon within the narrative. I love the way it exists as a simple fact, unrelated to Eartha's quest adventure. In the panel above, they carry out the everyday task of sweeping up shadows left behind by dream beings. (This is a strange and magical world.) #LGBTQ

We followed it through places so narrow that only the moment could get through.

rubyslippersreads I just saw this at the library, but all this animal sadness makes me glad I didn't check it out. 😿 7y
Lindy @rubyslippersreads This is the saddest panel, actually, as far as animals go. There's a dog weeping for her deceased human, also. (edited) 7y

Eartha: "Why is the news printed on biscuits?"
Cat: "If knowledge brings you agony then you're going to need a little comfort … news and pastry—problem and solution in one buttery bite."
