4 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
This School Library Journal Best Book of the Year celebrates everything butterfly, from migration to metamorphosis! Kids will love reading about Velma's own transformation from a timid first grader into a confident scientist. It's hard to be Velma entering first grade. That's because everyone has marvelous memories of her two older sisters, who were practically perfect first graders, and no one even notices Velma. But all that changes on a class trip to the butterfly conservatory, a place neither of her sisters has been. When a monarch roosts on Velma's finger and won't budge for daysno one will ever forget it . . . or her! Here's the perfect addition to any science curriculum. From the Hardcover edition.

Meh. This one didn‘t work for me. Maybe it‘s the fact that I have been to a LOT of butterfly gardens - and they would never just let you walk out with a butterfly. And bringing a bunch of monarchs in a bag to release for migration? Not how it‘s done! I‘m being an adult grump about the inaccuracies.

JSW I join you in grouchland. I hate inaccuracies like that, that can be easily fixed with just a short google visit. 5y
LibrarianRyan I get it. I have those same feelings about books. 5y

Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly by Alan Madison and Kevin Hawkes. This is a good shared reading story that students can read and connect with one another. This story won the Monarch Award. This is a story about a little girl who wants to be remembered the way her sisters were remembered. She started acting out and that didn‘t work. Her class went on a field trip to the conservatory where she was then noticed.

brittanyg The tour guide didn‘t know her sisters so she remembered her by her love for butterflies. Then all of the students followed her around because the butterflies were attracted by her. This is a good science fiction book about how butterflies go through metamorphosis. 7y
brittanyg Here is a lesson plan on how to apply this book in the classroom. http://images.randomhouse.com/teachers_guides/9780375835971.pdf UDL 3.1 and EL 4 is about activating prior knowledge. Can talk about what they already know to help them with before reading. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 7y
AJones I wish I had this book during my butterfly lesson. I absolutely love the music and movement component from your embedded link. Your ideas create a multidisciplinary lesson. Great job and I love it! I also want to have a real life caterpillar so students can watch the life-cycle and document their findings. Thanks for sharing and I added this link to my favorites. 🦋 7y

Great book! Little Velma Gratch is the 3rd Gratch sister to attend her elementary school. She struggles to be memorable in her own right and not by virtue of her older sisters. After gaining her own infamy, she discovers the magic of butterflies in her science class and shines bright through her hard work and the help of an unexpected friend. My daughter loved it!
