Where the Sidewalk Ends 30th Anniversary Edition
Where the Sidewalk Ends 30th Anniversary Edition: Poems and Drawings | Shel Silverstein
301 posts | 618 read | 2 reading | 58 to read
Including 12 New Poems! If you are a dreamer, come in, If you are a dreamer, A wisher, a liar, A hope-er, a pray-er, A magic bean buyer . . . Come in . . . for where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein's world begins. You'll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist. Shel Silverstein's masterful collection of poems and drawings is at once outrageously funny and profound.

I really enjoyed this collection of poems. I have read from this book since I was a child and could see this being used in any grade level classroom. The poems are imaginative enough for older students to enjoy reading them and will spark creativity for younger students. The imagery that goes along with the poems help the reader visualize the humor and creativeness of each poem.

This is a black and white classic book of poems by Shel Silverstein. The poems can be silly and extend from reality to create a sense of creativity for the reader. He has a unique blend of humor, imagination, and and heartfelt observations that can captivate and spark a world of creativity for the readers.

Sometimes your brain needs a break, so I got this from the library. My daughter (15) saw it on the table, gasped, and lovingly held it. She looked at me and said, “My childhood!!” I think that‘s all the review a classic like this needs.

TheKidUpstairs Perfect. I love this one. I have a tattoo of the candle from The Invitation on my wrist 💓💓💓 3d
AshleyHoss820 @TheKidUpstairs That is such a cool idea! I love tattoos that are nuanced like that! It‘s one of those, “if you know you know” tats. And you get to see people‘s eyes light up when they get it! ☺️ 3d

- Shel Silverstein was the first poet I ever read as a kid. I credit him with getting so many children interested in poetry. Sick was my favorite poem of his. It always made me laugh. I don‘t have room here to type the poem in its entirety so I kept to the first 2 lines. Anyone else a Shel Silverstein fan as kid?

A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin,
Come in!
Come in!"

Kicked off February with this book of adorably weird poems.
Some of them made me giggle out loud while reading them

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

The rhyme and rhythm in this book is fantastic and helps you read with a purpose that really brings out the meaning behind the text.

Poetry. Another vey well known poetry book. I remember reading this book when I was younger and coming back to it know as I am a little older holds even more meaning. These poems are written for children and I think that they can get a lot of meaning from them but its just different coming back to them as an adult.

I love this book and love the poems in it. I could see this being something I incorportate daily in my classroom. I think expxosing kids to this kind of writing it important and a good laugh is important too. One of my favorite musical artisists inspirtation was Shel Silverstein as well, so maybe I help create the next musical sensation!

I think I'll be taking a break from Silverstein. Maybe it's just not being the target demographic, but as much as my favourite poem was found in one of his books, the majority features an overabundance of nonsense and toilet humour, and it mostly made me tired trying to finish it.

This series was one of my favorites as a kid, and I still own the books today. They are creative, funny, quirky, and some have really cool messages intertwined.
Definitely recommend, especially if you have children or you grew up in the 90's and have not read it yet (I don't know how that could have happened, but I try not to judge)

I Must Remember By Shel Silverstein.

I must remember…
Turkey on Thanksgiving,
Pudding on Christmas,
Eggs on Easter,
Chicken on Sunday,
Fish on Friday,
Leftovers, Monday.
But ah, me – I am such a dunce.
I went and ate them all at once.

TheKidUpstairs @vivastory me too! Shel Silverstein was huge for me as a kid, and this poem in particular has continued to hold meaning for me through adulthood. 2y
TheKidUpstairs @LiteraryinLawrence thanks! It was not as painful as I was expecting. I had been told that the inside of the wrist is a really sensitive spot, and there was one small section of it that hurt. Other than that it wasn't so bad. It's also pretty small, so it was over in about 15 minutes! 2y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 It was less painful (and super cute) because it‘s just black ink. I didn‘t believe it until I got a colored tattoo that goes almost all the way down to my hand, but it is more painful. 😣 2y

This P, AS book is one of many poetry books by Shel Silverstein. This book introduces you to many different characters and tales told through stanzas and rhymes. This collection of poems stretches your imagination.

neanderc This book would be perfect during an AS of Shel Silverstein. Students can select and analyze different poems, study rhymes and learn to create their own poems!

http://www.shelsilverstein.com/learning/

The UDL Principles 2 and 3 regarding language, symbols and comprehension are met through the study of poetry. The EL Strategy 14 about simplified speech will be critical for understanding and comprehension of rhyming. #ucflae3414sp21
3y
DrSpalding The website you noted is absolutely the best to include with the author study of this famous poet. I like the idea of the students creating their own poems. As you read in the article and posted, poetry is an excellent genre for reluctant readers because they are short, can be funny and can enhance phonological awareness skills! 3y

I remember reading some of these poems as a kid and feeling conflicted and a little disturbed. Turns out I still feel that way! Some of the poems and arts seem rather dark and a little disturbing. On the other hand, he‘s very clever and imaginative and plays with words and rhymes so well. Like a more mature version of Dr Seuss at times. His picture on the back of the book also makes me laugh; it‘s very seductive 🤪

🌟🌟🌟 A generous rating because I am realizing that I still have at least one thing in common with my 14 year old self and that is I'm just not into poetry that isn't by Poe. I hoped these whimsical poems would hit the spot but I only enjoyed a few. Shel's drawing style isn't the cutesy sort of art I prefer, either. This will fill a #summerfun square for genre I usually avoid and a #bookspinbingo free space. @StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks

ravenlee I‘ve been rereading my Silverstein books and finding them disappointing. I remember them being really funny, and they‘re not. And I don‘t think my kid would find most of them funny, either. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I've never been one for poetry on the whole, either. I can remember teachers assigning Silverstein's poems and never particularly liking them, although I know they are treasured by many. Different books for different folks!! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @ravenlee @TheAromaofBooks I don't remember ever reading his work so either I didn't or it wasn't memorable. I don't think I would've liked this as a kid either. I saw this & The Giving Tree offered through Prime Reading. I liked the latter and thought I would read this, too. Well, at least I have an opinion on his work now. 3y

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a P picture book that is a collection of poems and drawings by Shel Silverstein. These short poems would be great as a SR for pointing out strategies and rhymes in specific poems. This book has won an award as an ALA Notable Book and an Outstanding Book Award. #UCFLAE3414SU20

Ameyer32 I would use UDL 2.3 support decoding of text by helping the students to break down the poems into their elements. I would also use ESOL strategy 8, use direct instruction by explaining the poems and their elements while reading. 3y
Ameyer32 additional resources for children's poetry can be found at https://www.poetryfoundation.org/learn/children to help with idea for getting kid into poetry.

A guide to Where the Sidewalk Ends can be found at https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/where-sidewalk-ends-shel-silverste... to help with guiding discussions and the elements of the poems.

nquintus This is my favorite book of children's poetry! You could definitely us these poems to teach your students that poems don't have to be serious or romantic. They can also be very SILLY! Great choice. :-) 3y
Ameyer32 I am a little attracted to the whimsical and silliness in an author or illustrator. 3y
DrSpalding You found fabulous resources. If you look up some of his poetry on YouTube you will see the whimsical illustrations come to life. Use anthologies like this in your future classroom by simply having poetry readings during downtime or right after transitions. It is easy to incorporate these short, fun poems. 3y
