Anna in the Tropics
Anna in the Tropics | Nilo Cruz
2 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this lush romantic drama depicts a family of cigar makers whose loves and lives are played out against the backdrop of America in the midst of the Depression. Set in Ybor City (Tampa) in 1930, Cruz imagines the catalytic effect the arrival of a new ''lector" (who reads Tolstoy's Anna Karenina to the workers as they toil in the cigar factory) has on a Cuban-American family. Cruz celebrates the search for identity in a new land.

My #ReadWithMrBook April #LibrarianRec book is this acclaimed drama! A colleague found me reading from the dramas section and rec‘d this one. A 1929 Cuban-American cigar-rolling factory acquires a new lector (work-floor reader) who begins reading “Anna Karenina”. The characters each have issues & aspirations. The plot paces well while delving into deeper reflections of culture, persona, literature, progress. 4.5 ⭐️‘s #PairWith: Havana Club Rum 🥃

Not being fluent in Spanish, some of the lines said by the characters went over my head, but I still got the gist of it.

Laura317 Good for you!! I admit that after taking Spanish from 6th grade through college (I had a minor in it), I am not sure that it would come back to me. 7y
