Dreams of Shreds and Tatters
Dreams of Shreds and Tatters | Amanda Downum
5 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Lovecraftian urban fantasy, but it's Lovecraft with all the worst exceses taken out. Beautifully written and brilliantly paced. When Liz Drake's best friend vanishes, nothing can stop her nightmares. Driven by the certainty he needs her help, she crosses a continent to search for him. She finds Blake comatose in a Vancouver hospital, victim of a mysterious accident that claimed his lover's life--in her dreams he drowns. Blake's new circle of artists and mystics draws her in, but all of them are lying or keeping dangerous secrets. Soon nightmare creatures stalk the waking city, and Liz can't fight a dream from the daylight world: to rescue Blake she must brave the darkest depths of the dreamlands. Even the attempt could kill her, or leave her mind trapped or broken. And if she succeeds, she must face the monstrous Yellow King, whose slave Blake is on the verge of becoming forever.

Mehso-so

I've read two of Amanda Downum's book before. Those were atmospheric, imaginative blends of high fantasy and horror and I enjoyed them a great deal. Here Ms. Downum turns to urban fantasy. The result is disappointing. The structure of the book is unruly, and the first 50-60 pages particularly unengaging. Once the story starts taking shape it becomes more engaging but all in all its not a particularly memorable book.

Day 4 - cover art by Jeffrey Alan Love (who I just looked up further for the first time and his art is really cool).

Oh boy. Squidapus is a very dedicated Squid...apus, but he could not finish this book. What starts with an interesting premise wherein the main character's best friend disappears under mysterious (and maybe magical) circumstances, turns into about 30 pages of how much the MC is in a happy asexual relationship with the love of her life, who she loves so much and gives tender cuddles and just is so in love with. It was...cloying. Just not good.

Do I think it is coincidence that this book came in the slipstream of True Detective? No. Am I still intrigued by the references the book purports to build its story on? Yes. We shall see if this is just a cheap dime novel or if there‘s something substantial at hand.
