Shaun Tan manages to poke and prod the reader‘s sensibility with only a few carefully-selected words and a masterful stroke of his artist‘s pen that gives birth to quirky and deliciously-surreal creatures. #MarchMagic Day 20: What a dream come true and absolute honour and delight for me to have this more-than-an-hour-long conversation with my #FavoriteMaleAuthor of all time. Shaun Tan was ever gracious, patient, kind, and generous-hearted in answering all our questions and the young kids‘ questions for the Reading Festival I co-convened this month. What an absolute ride. What an experience. And this is me standing in front of Shaun‘s home in Perth💕

“This all happened a few summers ago, one rather ordinary day by the beach. Not much was going on. I was, as usual, working tirelessly on my bottle-top collection and stopped to look up for no particular reason. That‘s when I first saw the thing.” That‘s from the 3rd page in the book andI don‘t want to say anymore because of spoilers. I loved the illustrations in this one, just like I‘ve done in the other books I‘ve read by him.

Beautiful simply beautiful. A man who loves to collect bottle tops notices a big red teapot shaped thing at the beach and befriends it. It then tries to figure out what to do with it since it's lost. Wonderful story and stunning graphics.

Bought it yesterday. Unique illustrations. Wonderful story. Went to see short movie based on this book. LOVE it.

I know there is a lot of love towards Shaun Tan‘s books, and wanted to let everyone know that the tagged book has been made into an animated short film. Shaun Tan won an Oscar for it. It‘s available on YouTube, if you like me didn‘t know about but want to check it out.

@mreads thank you for making me aware of this film. I‘ve now seen it, and I love it just as much as his other works.

Now I‘ll need to check out the book too.

I am focused on Australian illustrator extraordinaire - Shaun Tan at the moment. I am slowly working my way through his back catalog.
This one, though not my favourite is still outstanding. It has been adapted into an Academy Award winning animated short, which is really good if you can find it. It's worth taking the time to look at all the details, including the bottle cap inside cover !
