The Sabbath
The Sabbath | Abraham Joshua Heschel
Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication--and has been read by thousands of people seeking meaning in modern life. In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel, one of the most widely respected religious leaders of the twentieth century, introduced the influential idea of an 'architecture of holiness" that appears not in space but in time. Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the materials things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that 'the Sabbaths are our greatcatherdrals.'

The concepts on the architecture of time are amazing. This book may very well be life changing for me.

As a Christian, I was so interested to read a Jewish perspective on the Sabbath—I really value the length of tradition & practice the author brings to the subject. There are some beautiful reflective passages, but also lots of lofty musings on time & space + discussions of ancient rabbis‘ views, which were a bit tedious to me. I wanted something a little more down-to-earth, more descriptive of Sabbath tradition & practice. Still worth the read!

MayJasper I here you. That's what I would have wanted from this book too. I love the cover #coversublime 3y
BarbaraJean @MayJasper It really is a gorgeous cover! The cover image is one of a series of woodcuts, which are used at the beginning of each chapter. It‘s a beautiful little book. (edited) 3y

Starting these two today... the tagged is for my Education for Ministry group, and The New Jim Crow is for a Black Lives Matter book group with friends at church. Having grown up in the Christian tradition, I‘m so interested to read about the Sabbath from a Jewish perspective. And even though I anticipate it will be difficult/frustrating to explore the topic, I‘m looking forward to learning from The New Jim Crow and our discussion in a few weeks.

It does not matter if you are Jewish or not, believe in G-d or not, this book will make you want to slow down and allow yourself one day - a whole day - of true rest. No work, no negative thoughts, no running from one place to the other - but one spiritual day that can be spent meditating but most of all with learning through reading the Torah. A day dedicated to the soul. The Sabbath is a remarkable poetic book that I will read again.

This is so true.

teafetish @Insightsintobooks I have been interested in Judaism since childhood, but it didn't hit me until last High Holidays...I am in the process of moving this year, for many reasons, one of which is that there are no gathering places for Jews or people to facilitate the conversion process where I live...yes, please feel free to recommend any interesting books you know of 5y
Insightsintobooks @teafetish "Jewish Literacy Revised Ed: The Most Important Things to Know About the Jewish Religion, Its People, and Its History" by Joseph Telushkin is a wonderful place to start and used in many conversion courses I've noticed, at least Conservative ones. I'm not sure which branch you plan on going? This is like a mini encyclopedia of all things Jewish
