Printz Honor author Carolyn Mackler returns with this striking new novel that chronicles the lives of five teenagers through the thrills, heartbreaks, and joys of their four years in high school. Zoe, Jake, Mia, Gregor, and Whitney meet at freshman orientation. At the end of that first day, they make a promise to reunite after graduation. So much can happen in those in-between years. Zoe feels like she will live forever in her famous mothers shadow. Jake struggles to find the right connections in friendship and in love. Mia keeps trying on new identities, looking for one that actually fits. Gregor thought he wanted to be more than just a band geek. And Whitney seems to have it all, until its all falling apart around her. Echoing aspects of John Hughess The Breakfast Club, Carolyn Mackler skillfully brings the stories of these five disparate teens together to create a distinct and cohesive wholea novel about how we can all affect one anothers lives in the most unexpected and amazing ways.

I just spent the past 6.5 hours reading and it was glorious.

This was a perfect mindless read after a few stressful weeks of work. It was a bit shallow, probably because it‘s the story of 5 people and covers 4 years. Despite that, I think it was still a pretty accurate depiction of high school.

This one was pretty good. It‘s got some language and mature content so I wouldn‘t recommend to my 6th graders, but overall it was a fun read. The book was fast paced, broken up into sections of 5 characters, not in any specific order. I still would have liked it even more if it was read with a male and a female narrator to signify the gender of the speaker for the chapter. There was humor, too! It‘s a novel I‘d suggest to others.

This is a very quick read. I am moving through it faster than I thought I would. I think if the audiobook was narrated by a male and a female (male for Gregor and Jake, female for Whitney, Zoe and Mia), the chapters might be a little easier to follow along.

Found this on the available audiobook list through my library. It isn‘t on my “to-read” list technically, but I‘m too impatient to wait for another audiobook!! Interested to see how it goes!!

The great thing about this book is that it's not full of unnecessary drama. It follows five teens who meet at freshman orientation until the day they graduate. They aren't all friends. They don't experience a horrible event that binds them together. They just go about their normal lives. There are first loves, divorces, family deaths, and new friends. It's a really great- realistic- slice of life.

This is my current work audio book. The characters are interesting and the format (multiple narrators, time jumps) really works. The main thing that's standing out to me now (1/3 of the way through) is that it's SO nice to see a gay character who comes out and his parents are supportive.

So my #24in48 did not go as planned. Life got in the way and I kept accidentally exiting my timer because I hate not totally closing out of apps and it's habit. So this time is a rough estimate. This book was just okay. I enjoyed some story lines more than others and it seemed like it was trying too hard to fit in the typical teen issues. Not bad, but it never really hooked me.

Where in the world are you reading from this weekend? - Omaha, NE
Have you done the 24in48 readathon before? Attempted last time! Only 16 hrs
What book are you most excited about reading this weekend? This one!

Desha Yay for a dog rescuer!! I have Obsessive Canine Disorder myself...OCD lol ?. I help out with a couple rescues and used to foster for the rescues...until I became a "foster fail" with my maltipoo?. Yup, I wanted to keep every one of them! Someday a ranch? My own rescue? ??❤️??? I'd love to hear about what you are doing with rescue dogs? ☺️??❤️ 7y
ErinC @Desha we foster and occasionally transport too! I failed once, but my husband keeps me in check with a firm limit on only two dogs, and a third through fostering only. No permanent third dog! 7y
Desha Awww that's awesome!! 😍🐾🐾😍 Yes, I agree you have to set your limit at whatever it's going to be and just make sure to leave one spot for fostering!! I have two currently--my morkie Sophie and my cocker spaniel Star...if I could have another one where I lived I would probably still foster...it makes me so happy to see them change from scared or whatever to more comfortable, happy babies!! ❤️❤️❤️ 7y

Currently reading. Anyone else read this one?

EnidBiteEm No, but I've heard it's a little like The Breakfast Club, so I'm tempted ... 😀 8y
Coleen I did the audio a few months ago. It was okay, but didn't think it was terribly original. 8y
Kleonard Thanks, @Coleen. 8y

I love the way the five main characters had completely unique personalities, but their storylines slowly began to weave together throughout the novel.

I think I was drawn in initially by the appealing title and cover art. Overall, an okay story, but one that's been done before. Still love the title, tho!
