ABC Country Project. The Fatal Shore discusses the transportation of British felons to Australia & represents the start of its European colonization. Well-written, accessible but DENSE. I learned a lot - about British penal system, the development of longitude and latitude - & was reminded of the dire poverty in England. This book is 603 pages but my interest was 300 pages. I read up to pg 176 & then began to skim. Good intro; I cannot rate.

I want to learn more about other countries. Doing this randomly via the alphabet. In each case, reading 2 NF & 3 novelists. No deadlines or structure. Start ... A = Australia. Today, I watched 2 hour video & started my reading with this book. Novelists include Paddy O‘Reilly, Steve Toltz, & Tim Winton. My 2nd NF is George William‘ People Power, on history & future of referendums in Australia. 5 books is not knowledge ... merely a fun start.

This is not an easy book. The content, the writing, and the length are daunting. Hughes provides a deep dive into the system of convict transportation, along with a detailed accounting of the political and human factors that shaped the colonization of Australia and Tasmania.

Going to get adventurous and try this one again. It‘s about the colonization of Australia, as a way for Britain to get ride of their criminal population. Started this a few years ago and didn‘t get very far. It‘s a far cry from what I normally read, but it seems interesting.
