The Traitor's Niche
The Traitor's Niche | Ismail Kadare
9 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
At the heart of the Ottoman Empire, in the main square of Constantinople, a niche is carved into ancient stone. Here, the sultan displays the severed heads of his adversaries. People flock to see the latest head and gossip about the state of the empire: the province of Albania is demanding independence again, and the niche awaits a new trophy... Tundj Hata, the imperial courier, is charged with transporting heads to the capital - a task he relishes and performs with fervour. But as he travels through obscure and impoverished territories, he makes money from illicit side-shows, offering villagers the spectacle of death. The head of the rebellious Albanian governor would fetch a very high price. The Traitor's Niche is a surreal tale of rebellion and tyranny, in a land where armies carry scarecrows, state officials ban entire languages, and the act of forgetting is more complicated than remembering.

Loved this book, the best kind of #litfic the kind you can't put down. The story is about the nature of persecution, dissent and how governments subvert national identity. However, this is not a heavy read as such, I read it in a few hours. The imagery is really wonderful and I could read it again. Kadare sounds like a really interesting figure too, he suffered years of persecution as he was considered as a dissentor for his fiction. #Albania

Focus of the story is on relationship between Ottoman Empire and Albania, how to erased the idea of rebellion and how to stripped of Albania of its national identity.

A dramatic 1st page introduces us to the grim trophies of the ottoman empire displayed in the traitors niche. The book then tells stories of characters involved in the Albanian uprising against ottoman repressive rule. The book written in the 1970's and recently translated present an allegory for the communist enver hoxha regime with its violence and destruction of language and custom. Some amazing images, well worth reading.

Ive just started my first book of the man international booker longlist. I have read a couple of books by kadare before including Broken April last year which was a brilliant story of Albanian custom and folklore. So far this book promises to be challenging but interesting. His biography includes exile by the stalinist Albanian regime and im always astonished by so many writers who challenge repression - anyway i love the statue with this image.

saresmoore I certainly look forward to your review! 7y
