Half-Breed | Maria Campbell
15 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
Maria Campbell's biography is a classic, vital account of a young Mtis woman's struggle to come to terms with the joys, sorrows, loves and tragedies of her northern Saskatchewan childhood. Maria was a strong and sensitive child who lived in a community robbed of its pride and dignity by the dominant culture. At 15 she tried in vain to escape by marrying a white man, only to find herself trapped in the slums of Vancouver -- addicted to drugs, tempted by suicide, close to death. But the inspiration of her Cree great-grandmother, Cheechum, gives her confidence in herself and in her people, confidence she needs to survive and to thrive. Half-Breed offers an unparalleled understanding of the Mtis people and of the racism and hatred they face. Maria Campbell's story cannot be denied and it cannot be forgotten: it stands as a challenge to all Canadians who believe in human rights and human dignity

There's no way I'm going to do this book justice in attempting to explain why it should be read.
This isn't about the quality of the writing, though it's staggering to recognize a young woman wrote this and conveyed such a strong feeling of being present at the moments of growing up, those early years of childhood innocence and joy, considering everything that came after, the brief moments of pure storytelling relaying family foibles, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? ghost stories or legends, or that she relayed clearly, even sparely, so many traumas and heartbreaks.
I've never encountered such a comprehensive overview of all the issues that can negatively impact Indigenous woman in one self-portrait, only to be floored by the same person's quiet resolve to work for the solace and improvement of her community, all while recognizing how many government programs have failed them,
2w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? or actively worked against their interests. And the book offers still more in being a window into a specific time and place which provides history for later generations.
Campbell's new afterword is full of joy that there are so many examples of Indigenous art, writing, tradition-sharing, etc working towards decolonization.
2w
Robotswithpersonality 4/? I'll list the content warnings so you know what you're in for, but I truly think if this book isn't in curriculum it should be. First person experience relayed by one so often marginalized as both a woman and a Métis person is valuable in and of itself. The hope is we're always ready when someone chooses to share about their life, and this is an opportunity to learn and gain resolve, to hold space and listen to know how to help, 2w
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 so Campbell's hopes for the future can come true. ❤️‍🩹

⚠️racism, misogyny, domestic abuse, child abuse, substance abuse, death in childbirth, death of a parent, SA, withdrawal, internalized racism, mental health concerns, generational trauma, self-harm, institutionalization, separation of children

September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, a day which recognizes the atrocities and multigenerational effects of residential school, that the forceful assimilation of Indigenous communities is cultural genocide.
Today, I'll be starting this memoir about the Metis author's harrowing young life as an Indigenous person in Canada. 🧡

GingerAntics Wow, that sounds like such an important holiday. It‘s beautiful to see. It‘s aptly named. I wish America could have a similar day, but we are clearly still in our colonial era. 2mo
Robotswithpersonality @GingerAntics As much as it was long overdue it was also timely, established soon after some very disturbing discoveries. I hope that such a day can come about in the US without more of the same, or if it is so, it brings about eventual justice/healing. 2mo
GingerAntics @Robotswithpersonality after you guys found some of your horrible things, survivors came forward here to say we had the same. We‘ve known nearly as long as you guys have. We have still done nothing. It‘s like there is a collective shrug and move on for people in power, or “thoughts and prayers” the ultimate dismissal. 2mo

Robotswithpersonality @GingerAntics choosing to believe that once surviving trash fire of current administration is over that can be one of the many things that changes? 🤷🏼‍♂️ 2mo
GingerAntics @Robotswithpersonality it‘s definitely on the list! The administration before this one and the one before his first term didn‘t make a single move in that direction, though. It‘s not really on lawmakers‘ radar here. Sadly. 2mo

Mehso-so

I maybe made a mistake in listening to the audio. Maria herself read it, but she has a very monotone voice. I thought that I was still able to focus in the first half or so of the book, but I did miss things as the book continued, and I suspect I missed more earlier in the book than I originally thought

This isn‘t the sort of book you like but it‘s the sort of book you value. A startling memoir of Maria‘s life as a Métis woman in the 40s-70s, it was raw and emotional and difficult but ultimately, inspiring with the addition of a new afterward in 2019. An important read on my path to better understanding the Indigenous experience in Canada.

Maria Campbell is a mixed race (Indigenous and European) born in Canada in 1940. Here, she chronicles her horrific coming of age experience in a matter of fact way. It‘s an extraordinary book and an emotionally tough read. I read this in concert with the Storykeepers podcast, and their conversation about it added so much richness to the book and my reading experience.

Just leaving this here.

"If the past 30 years have taught us anything, it is that there is a powerful, loud bunch of privileged white settlers who do not want to learn about us or from us... they are unaware and do not have to bother doing their research." -- Kateri Akowenzie-Damm (Anishinaabe)

I always approach memoirs with a touch of dread, because what if I dislike them and end up having to tell everyone I wasn't keen on someone's most personal reflections?

I'm marking HALFBREED as a pick because it's important. All colonial North Americans need to educate ourselves on Indigenous experiences, and I did learn a lot from Campbell's memoir--but I really I struggled with her "this happened, then this, then this" narrative structure.

It's miserable out today, so I'm doing some poorly-lit indoor reading instead of my preferred outdoor reading. Frickin temperature drop.

This afternoon's selections include historical romance, short SFF, and memoir. Cards on the table: I'm struggling with HALFBREED. I'll finish it because it's an important text, but I've been reading it for more than a week and I'll be glad to move along to something else.

I've got the time and the inclination for some outdoor reading this afternoon! Also in my catch-up stack are vintage X-FORCE and last week's episode of GEEK ACTUALLY.

I planned to read a nice chunk of Maria Campbell's HALF-BREED before the Canada Games closing ceremonies today, but the stadium made me empty my water bottle on the way in and the line for the fountain was loooooong. I got to my seat barely a minute before everything kicked off.

Tonight, then. #canada150

twohectobooks I read this one in high school! 8y
xicanti @twohectobooks I missed out on it back then because I took the Honours English route, which weirdly enough meant we read far fewer books than students in the standard program. 8y
