Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner | Scott Cunningham
12 posts | 38 read | 3 reading | 7 to read
Cunninghams classic introduction to Wicca is about how to live life magically, spiritually, and wholly attuned with nature. It is a book of sense and common sense, not only about magick, but about religion and one of the most critical issues of today: how to achieve the much needed and wholesome relationship with our Earth. Cunningham presents Wicca as it is today: a gentle, Earth-oriented religion dedicated to the Goddess and God. Wicca also includes Scott Cunninghams own Book of Shadows and updated appendices of periodicals and occult suppliers.

3.5/5⭐ I am not Wiccan (and the guidelines in this book confirm that), but some outdated terminology aside, Cunningham seems to have put together a comprehensive introduction, including an example Book of Shadows. I liked his emphasis on valuing nature and finding what works for you. #bookspinbingo #booked2022

Chrissyreadit What path would you consider yourself? (I‘m curious after seeing your witchy book reviews) 2y
hissingpotatoes @Chrissyreadit That's a very good question! In brief, it could be described as eclectic and agnostic/placebo. Maybe some of the claims about energy movement/spellcasting/deities/beings/etc are true, maybe not. I don't know. For my practical purposes, I believe in the psychological power of practicing witchcraft to make positive changes in my own life. 2y
Chrissyreadit I def appreciate your response. Thanks for sharing it. 2y

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner is a classic introduction to the magical craft. As an ex-vangelical, I was wary of this book and the possibility of falling back into damaging religious thought patterns, but Cunningham‘s disavowal of any dogma and repeated assurances to do what works for you really put me at ease and allowed me to simply learn about Wicca. Clear, accessible, and highly recommended for anyone curious about witchcraft!

Very interesting, if mostly from a historical perspective—this book is older than I am and makes some things about the pagan community much clearer to me! I‘m not fully in alignment with Cunningham on most things, but I‘m close enough that this book felt comfortable and meaningful.

Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks I JUST remembered that this was my #bookspin for November! 3y

Fantastic starter book for anyone interested in learning more about Wicca!🌚🌝
Touches on a lot of different topics and doesn‘t try to claim this is the only way to practice Wicca or religion - very inclusive and informative book!💜
Various references in the back as well for future reading!
Excited to explore further!🌱

This book was great. I admit that I laughed when I read that he recommended contacting mail order suppliers to order cassette tapes of music for use in ritual, though. So glad that pagan music is more easily attainable today! There‘s an 80 page Book of Shadows that is interesting, and there‘s a great recommended reading list. Overall, this book felt inclusive and calming, and I highly recommend it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!

Clare-Dragonfly I‘m reading that now and laughed at the same thing! I had to look up the publication date after he semi-marveled at the idea of a Floppy Disk of Shadows 😂 3y

An excellent reference book, even if you follow a path other than Wicca. The book is worth getting for the Suggested Reading list alone.

I didn‘t realize this book had recipes, and I am delighted. My late aunt would have loved to run through these with me, especially the ones including edible flowers. Maybe I‘ll try some out soon.

Good read. A little too repetitive for me. There was a bit that I learned from this book. A lot a already knew from people I know.

I absolutely adore this book. I read it about two years ago now and I still constantly use it for reference when discussing Wicca.
