Set in 1810, the Venus Hottentot (as she was called), a young Black woman from South Africa, is lured away from her menial job to tour the world and make lots of money. But once she arrives in England, she is sold to a freak show and becomes a star there, making lots of money for her employers. She becomes so successful, she tries to make it on her own, without success. Eventually, she encounters a white doctor who represents her, becomes fascinated with her, and falls in love keeping her as his mistress. When his medical reputation and social standing is threatened he is forced to make a grave decision.
