This powerful middle grade novel takes place in Chicago in 1968 & is narrated by Sam, a 13 year old whose father is a civil rights leader who was friends with Martin Luther King, Jr. Sam's older brother is drawn to the Black Panthers and their philosophy over their father's nonviolent approach, which seems passive amid so much racial injustice. Sam wrestles with his feelings on which approach is better: the rock or the river. So timely & poignant!
