An enchanting historical fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Thanhha Lai's Newbery Honor-winning Inside Out and Back Again No one comes to the Second World on purpose. The doorway between worlds opens only when least expected. The Raft King is desperate to change that by finding the doorway that will finally take him and the people of Raftworld back home. To do it, he needs Pip, a young boy with an incredible gifthe can speak to fish; and the Raft King is not above kidnapping to get what he wants. Pips sister Kinchen, though, is determined to rescue her brother and foil the Raft Kings plans. This is but the first of three extraordinary stories that collide on the high seas of the Second World. The second story takes us back to the beginning: Venus and Swimmer are twins captured aboard a slave ship bound for Jamaica in 1781. They save themselves and others from a life of enslavement with a risky, magical planone that leads them from the shark-infested waters of the first world to the second. Pip and Kinchen will hear all about them before their own story is said and done. So will Thanh and his sister Sang, who we meet in 1978 on a small boat as they try to escape post-war Vietnam. But after a storm and a pirate attack, theyre not sure theyll ever see shore again. What brings these three sets of siblings together on an adventure of a lifetime is a little magic, helpful sea monsters and that very special portal, A Crack in the Sea. From the Hardcover edition.

A Crack in the Sea | H. M. Bouwman

“...when Raftwood drew close to the stuck-open doorway, they saw something very strange indeed. A group of people, six of them, maybe a family: two men-one injured- and three younger people, one carrying a baby on his hip. All holding hands...Walking on water. Walking like angels- like refugees, like survivors, like miracles given bodies. Walking on water.“

I like how this novel touched on sensitive and tragic moments throughout history and gives them a fantastical remedy. I also like how this book has stories of three different set of relatives whose stories intertwine. Examples of historical moments, are Jamaica in 1781 and war in Vietnam.

Pickpick

I think I would like to read this book because I enjoy stories with more than one world or dimension. The doorway between worlds open only when it is least expected. The Raft King wants to go home and bring his people too, but he can only do that with a little boy, Pip, because he has the gift of being able to talk to fish. He may or may not kidnap him, but Pip's sister, Kinchen, will do anything to rescue her brother.

“That was the oddest thing about the world here: that it was ruled in tandem, by these women.”

Bouwman captured a world that everyone always wonders about, the ocean. There is so much of it unexplored every age wants to no more or even imagine it themselves.

From the chapter I read I couldn‘t really get into the book. The summary seemed interesting, but I feel like this is a book you have to read from beginning to end to fall in love with.

Mehso-so

A Crack in the Sea by H. M. Bouwman is a piece of modern fantasy. It was written in 2017. This story involves a second world that can only be accessed at random times. The Raft King is set in getting to the second world on his own, but he needs some help. This story takes us on this adventure as well as tells us about past adventures of Pip. From the chapter I read this book seemed very interesting, but not exactly my cup of tea.

I like how this book explains the uphill and downhill battles of the characters and how they will make it out of their situation. I also like how there are illustrations throughout the book that don‘t have color. The black and white texture of the illustrations add a bleak and dramatic theme to the images.

This book is about a boy named Pip who can talk to fish. This book is the first of three other books that talk about the high seas of this “second world”. The story begins with twins named Venus and Swimmer who were captured on a slave ship. They manage to save themselves from cruelty, and fall into shark infested waters. The book tells all about the tale, and how they later meet Kinchen and other friends.
