This is another #MiddleGrade choice from my class library that I ended up listening to in order to fit it in this month. I appreciated it, but it didn‘t pull me in like some others. Set in 1961, Julian leaves Cuba with his 2 older brothers and the plan that their parents will join them soon in the U.S. Once there, the boys face bullying and separation, and Julian must learn to make his own decisions.

#MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime 1961

Daisey I also realized as I was listening that I am just a few days early to officially consider this an April #FoodAndLit choice for #Cuba. #HistoricalFiction #audiobook #MsDsLibrary 2y

The plot elements come together a little too tidily to be entirely realistic, but I appreciate that the author presents the Cuban revolution in a nuanced way, showing how it was good for some people and not at all good for others. The author also does an excellent job showing the helplessness and longing of the preteen years and how well-meaning adults sometimes miss the mark. From the Build Your Library homeschool curriculum level 6 book list.

Reading this book for task 5 on the #readharder challenge. Coming to the text with very little background on the Cuban Revolution or what it means to be an immigrant, so I'm hoping to learn much from this novel.
