6 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
The Ravishing of Lol Stein is a haunting early novel by the author of The Lover. Lol Stein is a beautiful young woman, securely married, settled in a comfortable life—and a voyeur. Returning with her husband and children to the town where, years before, her fiancé had abandoned her for another woman, she is drawn inexorably to recreate that long-past tragedy. She arranges a rendezvous for her friend Tatiana and Tatiana’s lover. She arranges to spy on them. And then, she goes one step further . . . From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

Lol its married with children and has long since settled into a routine that approximates living. She becomes unsettled after the family moves into her childhood home where at the age of nineteen her fiancé publicly jilted her. Lol its captivated by a familiar face and gradually inserts herself into her childhood friend's affair.

It is a cold depiction of characters and events related in a post-modern style - non linear with authorial asides.

Jacques seems totally unreliable. He is Tatiana's lover. Lol is obsessed by Tatiana? That's why she makes him hers as well. Or is it because he understands her so well? Her and her past. Which she has been keeping alive for years. Or hasn't she? It's hard to tell with this unreliable narrator. I'll never know, because Lol stays unreachable. I don't get to know her at all. Fascinating #1001books
