Long Upon the Land
Long Upon the Land | Margaret Maron
6 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Margaret Maron, New York Times bestselling author and Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, returns to Colleton County with an exciting new Deborah Knott mystery . . . LONG UPON THE LAND On a quiet August morning, Judge Deborah Knott's father Kezzie makes a shocking discovery on a remote corner of his farm: the body of a man bludgeoned to death. Investigating this crime, Deborah's husband, Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant, soon uncovers a long-simmering hostility between Kezzie and the slain man over a land dispute. The local newspaper implies that Deborah's family may have had something to do with the murder-and that Dwight is dragging his feet on the case. Meanwhile, Deborah is given a cigarette lighter that once belonged to her mother. The cryptic inscription inside rekindles Deborah's curiosity about her parents' past, and how they met. For years she has wondered how the daughter of a wealthy attorney could have married a widowed, semi-illiterate bootlegger, and this time she's determined to find the answer. But why are Deborah's brothers so reluctant to talk about the dead man? Is the murder linked to Kezzie's illegal whiskey business? And could his courtship of Deborah's mother have something to do with the bad blood between the two families? Despite Deborah's promise not to interfere in Dwight's work, she cannot stop herself from doing everything she can to help clear her brothers and her father from suspicion . . .

1. Myspouse took this picture some time in the wee hours of the morning. It looks pretty much the same now, just a little less dark.
2. I like it, but I‘d move in a heartbeat if it wasn‘t such a PITA.
3. Tagged
4. Anytime? 🤷🏻‍♀️
5. No idea, but breakfast is yogurt and a muffin.

Two years after telling Litsy I was going to read this book, once I finally started it took me two days to finish. I‘m sad the series has ended but very satisfied with the conclusion. I even cried a few happy tears over Kezzie and Sue‘s story. Other than a trip to VA to get Cal, and a honeymoon in NYC, this series had North Carolina all over it, and Deb went all over North Carolina in the course of ~20 books.

Crazeedi I haven't read all of this series yet, but I have really enjoyed the ones I have. I read somewhere she concluded the series. I must find out what book I stopped on and continue. 5y

Some more reading odds and ends to accomplish #in2019 ... and more that may or may not happen as the year progresses. 😀

-Buying books: I have fallen more deeply in love with my local indie bookstore, so they will be my first place to shop, followed by the new local B&N.
-Challenges: I plan to participate in #ReadHarder and #Booked2019 but don‘t know if I‘ll complete them.
-Audiobooks: need to revive that option.

Pickpick

Enjoyed the latest book in this series. As a North Carolina girl I could identify with the language and culture Margaret Maron writes about.
