A Voyage For Madmen
A Voyage For Madmen | Peter Nichols
6 posts | 9 read | 12 to read
In 1968, nine sailors set off on the most daring race ever held: to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe nonstop. It was a feat that had never been accomplished and one that would forever change the face of sailing. Ten months later, only one of the nine men would cross the finish line and earn fame, wealth, and glory. For the others, the reward was madness, failure, and death. In this extraordinary book, Peter Nichols chronicles a contest of the individual against the sea, waged at a time before cell phones, satellite dishes, and electronic positioning systems. A Voyage for Madmen is a tale of sailors driven by their own dreams and demons, of horrific storms in the Southern Ocean, and of those riveting moments when a split-second decision means the difference between life and death.

In 1968, it seemed that the last great adventure was to circumnavigate the globe solo in a sailboat. So a UK newspaper proposed a prize for the first man to achieve this. Nine set out to do so, with spectacularly bad results. This is a completely compelling book about a wild boat race. I loved this one.

LeahBergen I read this with my book club and everyone enjoyed it. 👍 1y

squirrelbrain Love your Lego! (Or Legos as I think you say in the US!) 1y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Thanks! And we do tend to say Legos, which is apparently wrong! It‘s Lego whether singular or plural. But in certain ways I‘m very American, so I‘m just going to keep saying it wrong. 😂 1y
iread2much I love the Lego set, very fun. 1y

Our Non-Fiction for this month is the incredibly gripping A Voyage for Madmen by Peter Nichols. This is the fascinating story of nine men who set out to race each other around the world, but only one made it back. A dramatic, inspiring and sometimes terrifying tale of people pushing themselves to the limit and the alluring nature of the sea.

KCofKaysville I really enjoyed it. There is a documentary movie about it too which is good. 3y

Fantastic book about the first solo non stop around the world sailing race and the impact that it had on participants, from those who pulled out of the race early through to the victory of the redoubtable Knox-Johnston. Looming of the entire story is the tragedy of Donald Crowhurst.
