When Violet Harper accepts a contract to accompany unwanted dead bodies--prostitutes, gin addicts, unidentified Thames floaters--to Northumberland for delivery to a doctor specializing in forensic experimentation, she is shocked to find one coffin inhabitant very much alive and wide-eyed in fear. Violet voices her qualms to the company shipping the dead bodies north, and they charge her with mismanagement of the coffins, summarily ending her contract. Does the company have something to hide? Why would they be shipping live bodies north? Determined to not only recover her reputation, but to solve the mystery surrounding these coffin shipments, Violet discovers a plot more disturbing than she could have ever imagined; a plot that may require her death in order to save her life...
