Mercy of the Tide
Mercy of the Tide | Keith Rosson
8 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
Riptide, Oregon, 1983. A sleepy coastal town, where crime usually consists of underage drinking down at a Wolf Point bonfire. But then strange things start happening a human skeleton is unearthed in a local park and mutilated animals begin appearing, seemingly sacrificed, on the town's beaches. The Mercy of the Tide follows four people drawn irrevocably together by a recent tragedy as they do their best to reclaim their lives leading them all to a discovery that will change them and their town forever. At the heart of the story are Sam Finster, a senior in high school mourning the death of his mother, and his sister Trina, a nine-year-old deaf girl who denies her grief by dreaming of a nuclear apocalypse as Cold War tensions rise. Meanwhile, Sheriff Dave Dobbs and Deputy Nick Hayslip must try to put their own sorrows aside to figure out who, or what, is wreaking havoc on their once-idyllic town. Keith Rosson paints outside the typical genre lines with his brilliant debut novel. It is a gorgeously written book that merges the sly wonder of magical realism and alternate history with the depth and characterization of literary fiction."

Mehso-so

I did enjoy it. Loved the character development but felt it lacked focus on the mystery being delivered. This kept the energy pretty even. It does have a kind of Stranger Things vibe that I found really fun, but over all because of the mystery reveal being kind of lack luster I will say so so. When I started this book I couldn‘t put it down but by the end I was having to pull myself through it. Worth a read though.

rockpools I like the sound of this one! Have you read it? 7y
JacintaMCarter @RachelO I downloaded it from NetGalley, but then forgot about it and had read only a few chapters before it expired. What I read was good, though, so I put in an ILL request for it at the library. 7y

Pickpick

I stayed up late to finish this baby. I am a fan of weird stories, which the author admits this is, and this fits the bill. I liked the character development in the novel especially for the kids but was a little impatient for the story to unfold. Looks like the author also does illustrations so I hope he includes some in his next book.

It's a windy, snowy day - perfect for staying in, keeping warm, and reading! I'm getting a late start to the #24in48, slept in then made waffles for the family. Trying to concentrate on the story while my husband snores in the recliner.

This is a beautifully constructed novel. A book about love, grief, growing up, being a parent and the lies we tell ourselves to get through the day. Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book

This book is moody and weird and gorgeous, and I loved everything about it, from its cast of broken characters (I wanted to take Hayslip home and give him a shower and a hot meal) to the slow burn of its plot, the way you can feel something ominous lurking, getting closer and more horrifying with every page. Imagine if Twin Peaks & Stranger Things gave birth to beautifully written literary fiction. It sounds weird, and it is, but it‘s so, so good.

I'm so excited to start digging into this ARC! I mean, listen: "A sleepy coastal town, where crime usually consists of underage drinking down at a Wolf Point bonfire. But then strange things start happening—a human skeleton is unearthed in a local park and mutilated animals begin appearing, seemingly sacrificed, on the town‘s beaches." (!!!)
