Counting Descent
Counting Descent | Clint Smith
Clint Smith s debut poetry collection, Counting Descent, is a coming of age story that seeks to complicate our conception of lineage and tradition. Smith explores the cognitive dissonance that results from belonging to a community that unapologetically celebrates black humanity while living in a world that often renders blackness a caricature of fear. His poems move fluidly across personal and political histories, all the while reflecting on the social construction of our lived experiences. Smith brings the reader on a powerful journey forcing us to reflect on all that we learn growing up, and all that we seek to unlearn moving forward."

Great collection of poems. Enjoyed hearing the author read them. Overall, some good audiolistening of late.

So my IRL book club leader has a massive crush on this author. Having read this amazing collection, I totally get the hype. We're reading How the Word Is Passed as our bonus January book, so this was some advanced prep or something. It's beautiful. I may just read poetry for the rest of the year.

This man in the definition of inspiration! Hearing him speak at TCTELA was an amazing experience, which made reading his words that much more sensational. What a phenomenal poet!

Too real. 😳

I saw this on the tagged author's Instagram. If you like slam poetry and social justice, keep an eye out for his work.

This modern poetry collection spans the author‘s childhood & experience growing up in New Orleans, to adulthood at Harvard University. Two standouts for me were Counterfactual (in which he recounts playing with waterguns in the street as a child with white friends, and his father‘s subsequent ‘reprimand‘ of this), Ode to The Only Black Kid in Class (which describes the weight of having to be a voice for a group when you‘re the only member present)

Counting Descent is a collection of cautious optimism. There was a directness and finesse that captured my attention. Smith shines a light on the simple, pure, and soulful; reminders that all the threats of the world can not take away what is holy. Family, love, joy. #poetry #diverseliterature #weneeddiverselit #poems #januaryreads #winterreads

I purchased this book at #Wordstock a couple weeks ago after having it on my to-read list for what seemed like forever. Really beautiful gems live within. The perfect book to get me out of my slump.

I went to #Wordstock and all I got was this incredible collection of poetry, important questions to consider from talented writers, meaningful conversations about Privilege with strangers, and random free things. Ugh! 💚 #PDXBookFest

As a white high school teacher who teaches students from all backgrounds, I was moved by Smith's poetry. His words resonate with me, not because I can relate, but because I see his words in the faces of many of my students. And it saddens me.
