Counting Stars
Counting Stars | David Almond
2 posts | 2 read
These beautifully-written stories grow out of David Almond's childhood in the streets and fields of Tyneside. They're funny and sad, realistic and strange, and are suffused with a profound sense of mystery and wonder. They show that the ordinary world is filled with extraordinary possibilities, that the local really does contain the universal. In Counting Stars David Almond tackles the themes common to his work - joy, darkness, love, death and identity - with exquisite sensitivity and tenderness. A must-read for Almond fans everywhere. From the author of the modern children's classic Skellig - winner of the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children's Book Award. David Almond won the 2015 Guardian Children's Book Prize with A Song for Ella Grey.

Counting Stars | David Almond

I don't want to sound rude, but: Why do so many people here give stars in their reviews? I mean, litsy has a rating system for the reviews, but a lot if people add a rating based on (I guess) five stars.

Do you feel it's not accurate enough?

jfalkens I add stars sometimes because that's what Goodreads and Libib is on. I find Litsty's rating system far superior tho. 6y
quietlycuriouskate I add stars now and then to differentiate between a good pick *** and an outstanding one ***** 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf A pick for me can be anywhere from a 3 star book to 5 star book so sometimes I give stars to differentiate. 6y

Kaye I think a star rating can help me explain a bit better than the sideways hand doohickey. There are books I give that to, that really aren‘t bad, I‘d rate them a 3 or a bit higher, but I don‘t think that rating deserves a thumbs up. A 5 deserves a thumbs up. (edited) 6y
Sisasuku @River_Voice @Kaye @irre Hm, for me a litsy pick would be a five or four star book, a litsy so-so a three or four star book. I inrerpret the so-so rating as "I liked it well enough, but had some minor issues with it". It's a good book but not a great one. But I feel like image if the hand is irritating. If it would be turned around by 180 degrees, it would look much more positive. 6y
Sisasuku @jfalkens I actively refuse to use the five star system on Litsy. I feel the litsy system gives enough information, and everything else should be in the review text anyway. 6y
Kaye I think it‘s everyone‘s choice whether to use stars or not. I honestly don‘t care either way. When I review books, I like to give a prospective buyer an accurate opinion. I think it‘s more accurate to give numbers, but don‘t mind using the hand thing too. My 3s mean it was good enough to hold my interest and finish the book, but I wouldn‘t read it again. I don‘t judge how others rate their books. (edited) 6y

Good for fans of Almond, as this dives into the background roots of his writing. Counting Stars is a collection of short stories about, and for, his family. Funniest part for me had to be that moment when the priest announced that counting beyond a 100 stars is a sin 😂😂 #somethingforsept #shortstories
