WELCOME TO NOWHERE. Dannys dad takes a job as caretaker at a marina on the shore of a vast, frozen lake in Harvest Cove, a tiny town tucked away in Canadas Big Empty. If youre looking for somewhere to hide, this is it. Its the worst winter in years. One night, running in the dark, Danny is attacked by a creature so strange and terrifying he tries to convince himself he was hallucinating. Then he learns about Native American legends of a monster thats haunted the lake for a thousand years. And that every generation, in the coldest winters, kids have disappeared into the night. People think they ran away. Danny knows better. Because now the beast is after him. From the Hardcover edition.

“A minute passes in shocked silence as we watch the fire eat its way through the store. “We gotta get out of here,” Ash says. But Pike doesn‘t move, hypnotized by the blaze. Black smoke leaks out through cracks around the door. The place is going up fast, the flames #feasting on the old wooden building. Now a shadow moves past one of the windows in the apartment above.” #feast #QuotsyOct19 #AllHallowsRead #GiveAScaryBook

Pickpick

I actually ended up liking this quite a bit, which surprised me. It was a slow starter for me. I read it for a YA Literature class, where it was under the “adventure” genre, and I think that fits better than the “horror” genre some people are describing it under. I am really easily scared, and this did not scare me. It did hold my interest, though. I liked the unique take on the beast as villain trope.
