This slightly-magical graphic-novel love story set in a softball league is silly, smutty, and super gay. I love it.

Stella Griffin has broken up with her boyfriend three weeks before prom. Stella does NOT believe in fairy tales, so she is shocked when she somehow ends up in one, with the waiter who saw the breakup. Stella & Reece must work together to find a way home without disrupting the story they‘ve stumbled into. This is a frenemy to sweethearts tale and was a cute retelling of Sleeping Beauty.
Book 54/100 of the year.
Maddy Washington deserved so much better than the childhood she'd had. If I could write her a new story, I would. Even though I want to know more, the author's ending is perfect! Themes of racism, bullying, and police brutality. A skillful retelling of King's Carrie.
Waylon Russell Brewer is a fat, openly gay boy stuck in the small West Texas town of Clover City. His plan is to bide his time until he can graduate, move to Austin with his twin sister, Clementine, and finally go Full Waylon so that he can live his Julie-the-hills-are-alive-with-the-sound-of-music-Andrews truth.

A YA Carrie retelling. It was a good read. Themes of racism, bullying, classism, and sexism. I did find the writing to be very YA. Everything was really spelled out for the reader, but I'm not the target audience so not a huge deal breaker.

Jackson‘s take on SK‘s Carrie that I actually might like better. Loved it!

A Black YA take on Carrie. It is so much more than the Carrie of my youth, Jackson is a phenomenon. Every book she puts out is more spectacular than I could hope for, and Weight of Blood blew me away.
The only YA to make my top 10 this year.
