4th in the excellent Rebecca martinsson series finds the lawyer involved in an investigation about a young diver discovered in suspicious circumstances. The focus centres on 2 brothers whose parents were involved in helping the nazi regime in Swedens neutral status. A good start to #20in4 @andrew65 hope all well Andrew

For the last two hours, I've been asleep, sitting on a fashionable novel. It's the only part of the body you can read it with.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️having always been afraid of being lost in the woods, this scary, claustrophobic book is intense and will make you think twice about hiking lol. The first half is definitely better than the last half but still a page turner.

An absolute delight! I enjoyed Pippi‘s exuberance as much now as I did as a child. I wouldn‘t want to BE Pippi, but I‘d love to have a friend like her!

Finished last night for #ChildrensClassicRead2024 It was fun to reread Pippi, it‘s been decades & the books & movies were something I shared with my dad. As a child I wanted to hang out with Pippi, as an adult, she tired me out! 😉 I need to see if I can find the movies now.

UwannaPublishme I‘d love to see those movies again too! 1mo

#ChildrensClassicRead2024

So fun to revisit Pippi! This is the edition I had as a child.

I read the 2020 translation in ebook and found some differences from mine. Pippi refers to “fly poop“ -- I was positive I had never seen that, and indeed it was “fly speck“ back in the day.

And while in the old translation, Pippi ate a “rosy mushroom,“ in the new one it's a “beautiful red death cap toadstool.“ I'm not sure which I find more appalling! 😂

Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes I vote for “rosy mushroom”🍄 1mo
LeahBergen I had this edition, too! 😄 1mo

Kallocain | Karin Boye
post image

This little known novel by Swiss author Boye was published between Brave New World & 1984, Kallocain takes its title after the drug which is developed & is named after the creator/narrator. Kallocain will not only compel people to tell the truth, but will reveal their thoughts/feelings. Although I have read other explorations of individuality vs community in dystopians, Boye's poetic & mesmerizing monologues (CONT)

vivastory of those subjected to Kallocain injections & their visions of a better world made this stand out. (edited) 1mo

"Later she enjoyed a delicious chicken salad on the balcony. She treated herself to a glass of port to accompany the ice cream, and she topped it off with a cup of coffee. If it hadn't been for the dead body in the gentleman's room, it would have been the perfect conclusion to a lovely summer's day."

Now that I've thought of Helen Mirren as Maud, I can't unthink it. She's perfect casting, & I'm now finding the unlikable Maud a bit more bearable.

Cathythoughts Great quote. I must look this up 👍🏻❤️ 1mo

LeahBergen I liked this book! 😆 1mo
Bookwomble @LeahBergen I liked the book, too, and I get it's dark humour but I didn't like Maud as she's a serial killer who murders because she likes it and justifies it on flimsy pretexts. I had a similar issue with the MC of Tokarczuk's Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. 1mo
LeahBergen Oh, I totally get it; she was very unlikeable! I‘ve not read Drive Your Plow. 1mo

A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman

This one was tough to get into. I got to about 150 pages and felt that it was all a grumpy older man with not much explanation as to why. I almost gave up on it but I'm glad I didn't. The writing is truly lovely and as soon as other characters came in and there was more given about Ove and why he was the way he was, there was humor and the story was endearing.
