There were a few aspects of the way this was written, terminology used by the characters that seemed odd for the time and the switching between perspectives, that sometimes distracted me from the experience of the story. However, the story itself of a woman raising her children on her own in the Australian bush and meeting an aboriginal man on the run was powerful. I was completely caught up in their stories and how those stories came together.

Tamra I‘m anxious to read this! Have you seen the film? I haven‘t yet. 1w
Daisey @Tamra I haven‘t. I just happened to download it from Libro.fm and then realized it would be a great choice for an Australia book. I‘d like to say I‘ll look up the movie now, but I rarely actually get to a movie after reading the book. 7d
Tamra @Daisey I‘m always looking for a good film or show to watch for the treadmill. 😂 7d

The History of Palau: From Prehistory to the Present | Einar Felix Hansen, Elias Adalbert Chin

#readingoceania2024 #palau Looking for something from or about Palau and saw this. Now I am just posting to warn others. This was written by AI and is a truly horrible example of AI. It is repetitive and goes into no detail. The phrase “significant impact” or “significant changes” is in every paragraph without sharing what those impacts and changes were. I read it as it was very short but highly recommend that others stay away.

Texreader Thanks for the warning. I‘ve gotten one or two of those the past few years and they‘re horrible 1w

#readingoceania2024 #antartica I selected this for my Antarctica reading as it has some amazing black and white photographs taken during Shackleton‘s failed expedition to the South Pole by photographer Frank Hurley. Shackleton‘s story of amazing leadership and perseverance comes alive in all its brutal cold conditions in the photographs. The book, sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History, is also fairly well written.

Librarybelle I‘ve heard good things about this one. 2w
Suet624 I read Lansing‘s book, not this one, but the story is so amazing. 2w

#Readingoceania2024 #Marshallislands Although this book falls squarely in the travel genre known as “my one year in______”, unlike most books from Peace Corp volunteers, this author has a lovely sense of humor, is capable of some self insights and knows how to write. We spend a year with him in a very small outer atoll island village and learn with him much about their language, culture and way of life. Thoroughly enjoyable and informative

Librarybelle This sounds great! Stacking! 2w

#Readingoceania2024. #Micronesian This novel is one disturbing read that not only challenges the myth of tropical paradises but shows a glaring light on western scientific greed. There are two narrators, the main character and his editor who writes in the footnotes. Both are unreliable and morally suspect. Although a slow read, and chilling, it is worth the effort.

BarbaraBB I am going to read this one too for that prompt! 3w

I liked this, but I think I either needed more context for the historical aspect than the few minutes of online reading I did or more love for Great Expectations to truly appreciate it.

Librarybelle Good to know about the context and how helpful it would be to have some knowledge of Great Expectations! 1mo
Daisey @BkClubCare Do you love Great Expectations or Dickens in general? I feel like that would have made this more impactful for me. (edited) 1mo
BkClubCare @Daisey - not sure if I have truly read Great Expectations or just “know” the story, and I like Dickens well enough. Can‘t remember why I enjoyed this one so much but I did. Years ago 😊 1mo

It was a beautiful evening, so I spent a bit of time in the hammock in the back yard with Gandalf and my current audiobook. Mr. Pip is set in Papua New Guinea and includes the only white man remaining on the island reading Great Expectations to students in the local school.

Bk3 of April is done! 2 books in 3 days, getting better fingers crossed.🤞The 3rd DS Kate Miles book, a series set in the Northern Rivers of NSW, was another great read. Kates brother Luke is in town for the funeral of a childhood friend when the 2nd of their teenage trio is shot & killed. The main suspect, Kate has to tread a fine line of trying to get the truth without compromising herself for her brothers sake. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2024👇

I‘ve read Caroline Alexander‘s book about Shackleton‘s expedition, & I have Alfred Lansing‘s on my shelf, so I couldn‘t resist downloading this audio as well. It‘s more straightforward & scientific in a logbook sort of way than Alexander‘s, but I still found most of it fascinating as a more immediate, first person version. The part about the Aurora got long to me, but other than that, I‘m amazed by this survival story every time I read about it.

I‘m surprised I‘m the first one to review this - it came out in 2019! Set in #Australia, this is a dual timeline double mystery, with similar situations and some trigger warnings (see below). Abby finds an injured teen in the bushlands, which triggers some horrific memories for her. This is the stage for the slow reveal of the past and present, involving abduction, violence, and what it means to forgive. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ I listened to this and had some trouble in the beginning identifying which storyline was being discussed - I think I would have followed along a lot better with print. It‘s a slow burn novel, with also a bit of romance. I liked it and would read more by Romer. TW: child abduction, violence towards children, abuse 2mo
Librarybelle It‘s terrible to say this is my first for #ReadingOceania2024 ! @BarbaraBB 2mo
Librarybelle #BBRC #Adult #OnceBittenTwiceShy - so many of these characters are grappling with their past and are afraid of falling into the same patterns, making the same mistakes, or even reliving the same nightmares. @LibrarianRyan 2mo
