The Alternatives: A Novel | Caoilinn Hughes
9 posts | 2 read | 13 to read
A tale about sisterhood, a novel of ideas, a chronicle of our collective follies, a requiem for our agonizing species, The Alternatives unfolds in a prose full of gorgeous surprises and glows with intelligence, compassion, and beauty. Hernan Diaz From the writer Anthony Doerr calls a massive talent, the story of four brilliant Irish sisters, orphaned in childhood, who scramble to reconnect when the oldest disappears into the Irish countryside The Flattery sisters were plunged prematurely into adulthood when their parents died in tragic circumstances. Now in their thirtiesall single, all with PhDsthey are each attempting to do meaningful work in a rapidly foundering world. The four lead disparate, distanced lives, from classrooms in Connecticut to ritzy catering gigs in Londons Notting Hill, until one day their oldest sister, a geologist haunted by a terrible awareness of the earths future, abruptly vanishes from her work and home. Together for the first time in years, the Flatterys descend on the Irish countryside in search of a sister who doesnt want to be found. Sheltered in a derelict bungalow, they reach into their common past, confronting both old wounds and a desperately uncertain future. Warm, fiercely witty, and unexpectedly hopeful, The Alternatives is an unforgettable portrait of a family perched on our collective precipice, told by one of Irelands most gifted storytellers.

Hughes made me think deeply about big ideas and problems, and challenged the way I might have thought about these things otherwise, while also drawing my investment into a cast of complex characters, their relationships with themselves, each other, and the world. what I mean to say is this is a novel that made me think and feel. I didn‘t see the ending coming but also it was basically perfect? Anyway, just read this, you won‘t regret it.

JamieArc Sounds like it will make for a great conversation during #CampLitsy24 1w
squirrelbrain It sounds perfect for #camplitsy24 doesn‘t it?! @JamieArc I just got my copy yesterday, ready to host in August. Really looking forward to it, thanks to your review, Claire! 1w

This ticks all the literary boxes:
beautiful writing ✅
Not much happens/“quiet” ✅
political ✅
Format change halfway through/“experimental” ✅
It stops rather than ends. ✅
I loved it at first then I got restless. Overall I really liked it but I‘m always left a bit unsatisfied by these types of novels?! 🤷‍♀️ maybe it‘s just me. (Audio version was brilliant tho!) #camplitsy24

squirrelbrain Thanks for letting us know your thought - I don‘t like unresolved endings either, so we‘ll see! 3w
Caroline2 @squirrelbrain It‘s a great book for Camp Listy and I can‘t wait to hear everyone‘s thoughts about the ending and the format change. 😃 (I had to read it early as I was on the waiting list on borrowbox then it just became available?! Now there‘s a massive waiting list again!) 3w
squirrelbrain I‘m looking forward to hosting it! ❤️ 3w

TheKidUpstairs Sounds like exactly my type of novel! @squirrelbrain and I tend to agree on a lot of books, except for those unresolved endings - I love them 🤣 3w
TheKidUpstairs @BarbaraBB hopefully this one works better for you! 3w
rockpools Audio it is, then! Thanks 😊 3w
squirrelbrain Oh well, we definitely can‘t be friends then! 🤣🤣 @TheKidUpstairs 3w
BarbaraBB @TheKidUpstairs I hope so and expect too. It was really me and my mood, not the book I think! 3w

You wouldn‘t know it from the sunny day, but bad storms left us without power for 12 hours overnight!

I was so pleased to get my @AardvarkBookClub picks (far right) with the v cute bookmark! #aardvark I bought the tagged for #CampLitsy24, and Impossible Things was just $1 at my library‘s sale.

Library books: Limits and Morningside were on the CL longlist. Mean Boys is a queer essay collection I‘m already enjoying, and 888 just looked fun.

Ruthiella Glad the lights are back on! 😃 3w
BarbaraBB Such an amazing stack of books 😍😍 Hope the storm has left you! 3w
squirrelbrain That is a cute bookmark! 3w

Megabooks @BarbaraBB fortunately it‘s been nice since but Katie already lost a large tree on her new property. We had several very old large ones come down this time. One even blocked a nearby road! 3w
Megabooks @Ruthiella me too! 12 hours was long enough! 3w
dabbe @Megabooks 😮🤩😀 3w
BarbaraBB That is such a shame, those trees. They must have been so gorgeous in that garden of yours. And Katie is coming to live there for sure? That is so wonderful 💛 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, Katie is coming for sure!! 🎉 3w
BarbaraBB That‘s the best news! How wonderful for all of you! 3w

I went to the local bookstore for book club for Clear, but apparently this group is one that periodically just decides not to meet, so I chatted with the bookseller a bit then bought another #camplitsy24 selection. I almost bought Whale Fall, too, before I remembered I'd preordered it from bookshop.org already. That was a near miss!

Next month's selection is The Guest by Emma Cline, so I might try to make it to that one.

I shouldn‘t be allowed in a bookstore when I‘m tired 🤦🏻‍♀️🥱

Bookwomble I would volunteer to be your Sponsor, who you can call when you need support to stay book-sober, but I regret I'm more likely to be a book-binge enabler 😔 1mo
PathfinderNicole Oh I LOVE Murdle! 1mo

I JUST decided two days ago that I was going to chill out with the pre-orders. Today I found out that Caoilinn Hughes has a new book coming out this year.

So, that didn't last long!

If you haven't read The Wild Laughter yet, I can't recommend it enough. And this one looks like it's going to be just as special.

Hooked_on_books Being a bookworm can be hard! 2mo
