Korean immigrant, Mina Pak Johnson, discovers a long-forgotten picnic basket in her late husband‘s closet. The basket holds decades of memories, including her mother‘s wishes for her happiness and her own shattered hopes for her first child. Filled with regret for never having used it, Mina embarks on a journey to re-create the picnic they never had. Along the way, she uncovers an unexpected and loving gesture her husband made years ago.

I can see why this book is popular & garnered rave reviews. It‘s a great courtroom drama, an incisive examination of the immigrant experience, culture, & the weight of family expectations/hopes, as well as a compelling look at the moral gray areas people find themselves in as they protect themselves & their families at the expense of others. I had real issues, however, with how the author wrote about autism & that kept pulling me out of the story.

This was a re-read for IRL Bookclub ( my suggestion 😬) While I enjoyed the book upon first reading on the second go around I was less enthusiastic. I still think we can eek out a good discussion but I may have lost some street credit amongst the bookclub ladies 😜 A story about who & why might someone want to sabotage a controversial “treatment” apparatus.

ShyBookOwl Oops! Maybe discussing will bring back fond memories of why you enjoyed it so much the first time 🤷🏽‍♀️ 2y
Cinfhen I love that spin @ShyBookOwl Thanks for the positivity💖 2y

Cinfhen I did too @CBee it‘s a re-read for me!! (edited) 2y
Megabooks I was just thinking about Madonna yesterday and how she was the same age when she put out Ray of Light as Beyoncé is now. And how a) time flies and b) I‘m happy to see women succeeding so well in music in their 40s. Anyway…it was a weird thought. I‘ll write you back tonight barring an emergency. ?? 2y
Cinfhen Agreed, it‘s great to see and hear so many mature female voices in the music industry @Megabooks 💪🏼 (edited) 2y

This was a mostly enjoyable read/listen, I did get kind of bored after a while hence the audiobook/listening to it, overall not worth the hype if there is any 3.5/5 Read for #Buzzwordathon - October - Elements and #spoopathon

Litsy has this ARC as “Miracle Submarine” but I think the title will be changed to “Miracle Creek” (publishing date: 4/16/19). This is a court room drama/thriller that deals with immigration, autism, parenthood and family. Kim handles these subjects exceptionally well all while creating tension and keeping the reader guessing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #arc #NetGalley

The majority of what I do for work involves upcoming releases. I love being able to share titles with the hopes that each book will find its reader. Here are a bunch I am looking forward to checking out (plus the new Danielle Dutton because YAY.) What are you reading this weekend? 📚❤️📚

MOAR EPIC #BOOKMAIL TODAY! Miracle Submarine is out in April and when I read the plot synopsis I had to have it! The Yoo Family run a hyperbaric oxygen tank (the Miracle Submarine) to cure all kinds of ailments, but when it explodes foul play is suspected. 😱😳😱😳 I know what I‘m doing toniiiiight... PS: Look at that gorgeous cover! 👀😍

Reviewsbylola That looks and sounds like a really cool book! 6y
