Seriously enjoying this audiobook! It‘s been awhile since I‘ve read a thriller/mystery (though you know I love the side of romance vibe I‘m getting).

I‘ve maybe listened to my audiobook for an hour or two since school started, but that‘s about it. Finally settling in to do some reading. Nothing I was reading before interests me so I‘m picking up what I hope is a cute and adorable contemporary romance. #teacherlife

I read like 80-85% romance. The rest is a general mix.

Because of this I am NOT at all prepared to handle deaths of people I like and connect with.

I know the book is about Killer Mermaids, but I‘m struggling to accept I may not get my HEA. 😭

Can we talk about how smoldering hot this guy is? No question this had to be a physical book.

I wanted to love this as much as everyone else, but unfortunately I didn't.

What I liked:
*The romance.
*Sexual Identity Crisis.
*The family/friends.

What I didn‘t like:
*The chapters. Long af.
*On the long side for a contemporary
*Timing - hard to keep up with how far apart events were.

Just an observation:
*I thought this was a YA book, but all the characters are 20+, though they often behaved immaturely.

JanuarieTimewalker13 The writing was somehow off to me, but I wasn‘t interested enough to figure out how she went wrong. Too drawn out, a bit of a snooze. 4mo

Chapter seven is 46 pages. FORTY SIX!!!!!

There were SO MANY places that could have been chapter breaks, imo.

Besides my chapter issue I still feel like I‘m slogging through it. It‘s not all bad (Alex struggles with his sexual identity at first and I thought that was well done) but I‘m not having those amazing feels.

ninergrl6 I agree about the chapter breaks, or lack there of 4mo

I‘m not digging these long chapters AT ALL. I‘m 54 pages into the book and I‘ve only read TWO CHAPTERS. Its so frustrating to have to read 10 more pages before hitting a stopping point

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m kind of slogging through this one. It‘s got some chuckles, but I think it‘s a bit overhyped. 4mo
ninergrl6 Yep the long chapters were odd. LOTS of stuff happened in each chapter & they seemingly could've been broken up into more logical, manageable increments. 4mo
petersonks15 @JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m still not very far in, but I‘m not sucked in like I felt like I should be. Slogging is the most appropriate word for me right now as well. 4mo
petersonks15 @ninergrl6 Yes! I realize it‘s authors choice and all that, but there did seem to be other, logical. Places for chapters rather than having them be 25+ pages long. 4mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m on p168. Exactly!! The way it was hyped up in booktube got me so excited. I‘m going to try to hold on. 4mo

Shalvis is easily one of my favorite authors and I knew I could turn to her book to bring some happiness in to my weekend. She absolutely did not disappoint.

As with the other two books in the series there are two main females with their own love story. I loved that this one featured an already married couple going through some stuff.

STAY FAR AWAY

Looks like something cute and fun. That is NOT what you get.

1. I don‘t feel the author did any research on baseball players and how contracts work.
2. She just left her son (who hadn‘t woke up yet) in the hospital with her neighbor to wear a wire to catch the bad doctor. Riiiiiiight.
3. Not a single person in this book is worth liking. Even the righteous main character who gave the baseball player a unethical shot anyway.

petersonks15 4. Too much man handling by people.
5. Worse than a daytime soap. Random drug use, too many different plot things: injuries, skeevy doctors, attempted assault, blackmailing, abuse, murder, crazy ex, need I go on?
6. Not a fan of the awkward at times writing. I know Angel is finish up nursing school, it‘s super awkward to have her referred to as a “student nurse” several times throughout the book instead of using her name.

At first I found this book cute and fun, but now it‘s like a train wreck I can‘t look away from. Too much man handling from the male love interest. Too much crazy with his people, I feel like I‘m reading a soap opera. The writing is off putting too. I‘m at 80% and instead of using the main characters name the author keeps using “student nurse”.

I really enjoyed this book, but the cover is a bit misleading. It says “fun and cute”, and while it was fun and cute (lots of banter and tension) there were also two serious things going on. One affected their relationship more than the other, but both made me cry.

Edit: The blurb does say you‘ll reach for tissues, my bad for being unprepared. 🤷🏻‍♀️
