In a Holidaze | Christina Lauren

Pickpick

In a Holidaze, by Christina Lauren, is a perfect book to read at the holidays. It follows Mae, a girl who has spent every Christmas at her family‘s cabin with the people she loves most. Mae hates change, so when she finds out that the cabin is being sold, she is very crushed. She‘s scared that the bonds between her friends and family won‘t be the same. As she tries to save the cabin, she forms an unexpected relationship with her lifelong friend.

maria.pickering The first-person pov makes for many funny moments, so I‘d really recommend this book to anyone who likes rom-coms. The pov is established by the use of pronouns. 2y

A Little Life | Hanya Yanagihara

Pickpick

A Little Life by Hanya Yanigihara, is a beautifully written novel that follows four young men from their time in college, all the way through adulthood. As the characters face unimaginable trauma, especially that of the enigmatic Jude, their friendship and love for each other never wavers. The story covers tough and disturbing topics, but they are brought to light by making readers feel a sense of awareness and empathy.

maria.pickering When reading A Little Life, it is very apparent that Yanigihara has established a strong theme of friendship, especially between Jude and Willem. Through all hardships, their friendship shows that sometimes the families you make for yourself are more important than the families from which you are born. If you like realistic fiction that contains characters with great representation, this book may be for you. (edited) 2y
maria.pickering The story is in third person, but often switches focus from character to character. Because of this, make sure you pay attention to details of each character for a more effortless flow while reading! 2y
