Wonder | R J Palacio
post image

Wonder is a realistic fiction book about the experiences a boy has in and out of school with an unusual face. I‘m so glad I was introduced to this book. I enjoyed how the book had different perspectives from other people because it gives you an insight on how the other characters felt. These are good discussion questions for the class. http://rjpalacio.com/for-teachers.html #UCFwalterslit

Kirsten.Pacheco This is by far one of my favorite books yet! I think it is a great book to read with a class and shows how bullying others doesn‘t always make you “cool”, that sometimes compassion and friendship is enough to be cool. I LOVEEE this book!!!! 6y

The Landry News | Andrew Clements
post image

The Landry News is a realistic fiction book that I remember reading as a young student. I still have the book and I also have some of Andrew Clements other books. The Landry News is about a girl who writes a newspaper but it gets her into hot water when she writes about her teacher. This is a worksheet that correlates with book. http://www.mrsiwek.info/uploads/9/0/6/5/9065220/__landry_news_literture_guide.pd... #UCFwalterslit

Linsayesp @lburgos9 this book almost sounds like Harriet the Spy. It seems like a good read and very entertaining. #UCFWaltersLit 6y
lburgos9 @Linsayesp I‘ve never heard of Harriet the Spy. I might need to check that book out. This book is definitely a good read. #UCFwalterslit (edited) 6y

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a historical fiction book set during World War Two. A boy meets a young Jewish boy and they form a unique bond. I‘ve read the book and seen the movie and I recommend everyone to do the same thing. Get out the tissues because it gets very emotional. These are lesson plans that correlate with the book. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/the-boy-in-the-striped-pyjamas-resources-6... #UCFwalterslit

A Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle
post image

A wrinkle in Time is a science fiction book about a girl who goes through space and time to look for her missing father, with her brother and friend. This book is the first book in a series called the Time Quintet. I would definitely recommend and use this book for grades 4+ because the material can get complex. These lesson plans correlate with the book chapters. https://www.readworks.org/lessons/grade6/wrinkle-time/lesson-1. #UCFWalterslit

BLYTHE44 @BLYTHE44. I remember having to read this book in middle school. At the time I don‘t think I truly appreciated how great this book is. Now I wish I would have embraced it better back then, but at least I got to as an adult. @UCFWalterslit (edited) 6y
lburgos9 @BLYTHE44 I also had to read this book in middle school and didn‘t take it serious enough. I read this book a couple of years ago and finally understood why this book is great. I haven‘t read the other books yet though. #UCFwalterslit (edited) 6y

I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg is a Historical Fiction book about a boy and his sister who run away from their farm because they were scared some soldiers were going to separate them. After a series of events, they ended up in the Battle of Gettysburg. I would do guided reading with the students. A quick video about the Battle of Gettysburg for extra reinforcement. https://youtu.be/HNb4FxBJP48 #UCFwalterslit

Ocean Animals from Head to Tail is a non-fiction book written by Stacey Roderick. The book uses illustrations of sea animals with brief descriptions of them. The book is very engaging for young readers because the readers have to try and guess the animal before they can read the description. A way to continue the theme of “ocean life” by using these lesson plans. http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/00-2/lp2082.shtml #UCFWalterslit

Caitlin4 I like the idea of making the kids guess what the animal is before telling them. It'll keep them engaged and it's like a game. 6y
Kirsten.Pacheco This is a cute book to help younger students learn their animals and the qualities each of these animals possess. It‘s a good way to keep the students engaged as readers! I love the idea. 6y

Who was George Washington is a biography book for kids by Roberta Edwards. The book talks about how George Washington was as a little kid all the way until he became president of the United States. It‘s an easy read story that kids will enjoy reading. This is a good additional activity the kids can do after they read the book. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/george-washing... #UCFWalterslit

Caitlin4 The Who is/was series is a great tool. They could be used in a variety of ways and give really good background about different people. Lessons could be done about presidents, famous leaders, sports stars or many more. 6y
Racheal.Shi.Horton I used this book too, it is a good way to students about George Washington and what he has done for our country. 6y
