I'm still getting used to writing a review in so little words! Not that I write entire volumes as a review usually, but still, 451 characters is very little and I like to get a little deeper into why I did or didn't like a book. There are after all so many grey areas in-between 'pick' and 'pan', right?
Anyway, this was a good book 😊 Not outstanding, but good!

Anansi Boys: A Novel | Neil Gaiman

Perhaps my favourite author, definitely my favourite doggo 😉 Anansi boys was another hit for me. I love how Gaiman does myths, both when incorporating existing material or just creating his own. Currently reading his 'Norse Mytholgy'

The Women's prize winner was announced yesterday this one wasn't it. Although not my favourite of the nominees I read so far, it would've more than deserved the prize as well because it's a beautiful book.
The word "unsettled" in the title is very apt because it's how I felt after finishing this. It's just a little bit heartbreaking. It's a study in how the choices of our parents can affect our life. Pain and beauty combined in this one.

This book tells the story of an entire village exploited by a big company. Of lives being traded for profit.

It has a lot of very strong passages that really get to you. But it also has a lot of chapters that feel a bit like they're just there to fill up space, and that's a shame. It's made me sort of unsure of how to judge this one. Was it bad? Certainly not. Was it good? Meh...

A gorgeous cover and mythology content, I was so excited for this one. Unfortunately it fell a bit flat for me. The main problem I have with this is that the main character is not the most interesting person in this book. Ariadne comes across as a bit boring, she doesn't have that much of a personality.
The most interesting chapters were the one's where Phaedra took center stage, and I kind of wished the entire book could've been about her 🙊

Lecture Francophone pour le mois d' Août.
It's set in medieval times, it's a female revenge story, I was immediately intrigued. I'd read some reviews beforehand and saw some mixed one's. But I went into the book knowing pretty much exactly what I was going to get and as such, I found it an enjoyable enough read.
It's not top notch literature. But I saw the second part of the series for sale second hand and I enjoyed it enough to buy it 😉

Villette | Charlotte Bront

Pickpick

It couldn't quite reach the same heights as Jane Eyre for me. Mainly because of the characters, they're just less compelling. Lucy is no Jane and Mr Paul, alas, is no Rochester. Where the other Brontë books are full of emotions, Villette's Lucy is a lesson in constraint. More sensible? Sure. Less entertaining? Also for sure.
Still, plenty of good stuff too. Especially being Belgian, with it based on Charlotte's experiences in Brussels, it was fun.

I debated in which language to read this one for a long time. The original is French, but the English translation won the international Booker prize this year. In the end the Dutch translation was on display in the library and I ended up taking that one home.

It's short but powerful. There's some rather disturbing imagery in there. Nothing gratuitous, I personally felt, it fits the story and subject matter. But still, it packs a punch.

I know I'm fairly late to this party but I'm happy to have finally arrived nonetheless 😊 I loved this book! Totally lived up to the hype.

I ordered my first e-reader just now after taking my sister's for a testdrive. So excited for it to arrive. My tbr is about to get a whole lot bigger!

The Water Dancer: A Novel | Ta-Nehisi Coates

This one was nice but with a bit of an uneven pacing. It took me a while to get really connected to the characters. Some parts of the book are a bit long-winded, or maybe unnecessary even? I felt the magical realism took away a bit from the historical fiction side of the book, and that part might've been more impactfull without the magical side of things.

Not bad, but not a stellar read for me

Simple doesn't mean less, especially when it's done well. This book tells a very simple fairy tale, while trying to share some truths about life and love along the way.

I personally don't really like spirituality, it makes me cringe. But it has it's place in this book, told as a simple children's tale. It's small, has some nice illustrations, I enjoyed the few hours I spent reading it.

Did it blow me away? No. But not every book has to, right

The Salt Path | Raynor Winn

I finally got to experience The Salt Path, and I get why this book strikes a chord with so many people. The first chapter hit me like a ton of bricks. I can't imagine having to go through what happened to them.

The book had some up and downs for me, there were some parts where it lost my attention just a little bit, became just a tad monotonous. But on the whole the balance still came out very favourably for this book. I loved reading it.

The Witch's Heart - Genevieve Gornicech

My favourite read of July. It's a retelling of a myth, so totally my jam, but to switch it up I moved from the usual Greek to Norse mythology.

This tells the story of Angrboda and Loki and it's wonderful. Everyone has a crush on Loki, whether it's the traditional of Marvel incarnation, but I really fell for Angrboda in this book.

Spring - Ali Smith (Dutch translation: Lente)

I read Winter recently and if you heard me talking about it you know how I'm feeling about the seasonal quartet. Still loving it!

I'm really craving some 'appropriate' weather right about now! All we're getting is rain and more rain. This pic was taken on a rare dry and sunny day and I'm living vicariously through it.
