Someone is murdering people in modern-day London like Jack the Ripper once did and Louisiana teenager Rory is an eyewitness to something strange and ghostlike that makes her become a part of the mysterious crimes. This fantasy/mystery novel is book one of a series that will keep you glued to the pages and make your heart pound just a little in fear (or if you are a fraidy cat with a big imagination like me, make your heart pound a lot in fear!).

As you read this story, you travel along with teenage Yanek to ten different concentration camps during World War II. TEN. This is unfortunately based on a very true story. As a result, your heart is wrenched and your mind has a hard time comprehending the horrors that so many people have experienced. I visited Dachau concentration camp not too long ago, and this book brought those emotions that I felt in that quiet, dark place right back.

There is something special about Gary D. Schmidt's writing. He can make a cow wiggling her rump at milking time one of the sweetest things ever and make my heart ache so easily by how he makes me root for his characters. His "The Wednesday Wars" and "Okay for Now" are just as well-written, but I don't remember crying while reading THOSE books...
