Am I Beautiful? | Jon Athan

Pickpick

Athan takes this urban legend and brings it into the present day. Instead of a vengeful spirit, our Slit-Mouthed Woman is a woman who was wronged. A woman who's changed after experiencing such violence. And how violence begets violence. This was really well done, and while I personally would've preferred a different ending, it made sense for the story. And while I recommend this for any horror fans, know that it's capital-G Graphic.

Pickpick

When I saw someone call this an adult version of Scooby Doo, I knew I had it pick it up. And frankly, I wasn't disappointed. This is definitely Scooby Doo all grown up, with queer characters, suicide, mental illness, and real monsters. The writing style flips from second to third person to a screenplay and back again. It's fast-paced and a wild ride from start to finish. I absolutely adored this book.

Pickpick

I remember the first time I watched the miniseries and how much it scared me as a kid. I took me until last year to finally read this and it did not disappoint. What I love here is that all the characters were fleshed out and memorable. Everything in this book seemed to have a purpose, there wasn't any fluff. And the root of this book is the power of friendship; how it can transcend time and place. And how friends can conquer anything.

I'm Glad My Mom Died | Jennette McCurdy
post image
Pickpick

One of the rawest and most honest memoirs I've read. McCurdy doesn't hold back as she shares growing up with an abusive mother, being coerced into acting, and battling aneating disorder. The way McCurdy talks about her childhood, you can feel the fear she felt and the eggshells she walked on so vividly. I did this on audioand her feelings really come through her reading. I absolutely loved this one and highly recommend it.

Spending the day cleaning my office and finishing up this book on audio! It's so good but breaks my heart.
