The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls

Mehso-so

In “The Glass Castle” Jeannette Walls chronicles her life through stories of living with her family that refuses to live within the boundaries of what society deems normal or even acceptable. We see her catch on fire while cooking hotdogs alone as a toddler, be thrown from a moving vehicle, taught how to swim by being continuously dropped into a sulfer lake, go “demon hunting” in the desert, live in an abandoned depot, play hide-and-seek in. . .

Montana-Jonassen-Armstrong0 casinos, watch a piano get dragged through their house, borderline run the school newspaper, interview a famous airforce pilot, and eventually move to New York to make her own way. This is all of course alongside some pretty terrible neglect and abuse. From seeing her father drunk nearly every day, watching her parents nearly kill each other multiple times, being sexually assaulted by a fair few people and having to do odd work constantly to. . . 1y
Montana-Jonassen-Armstrong0 get basic necessities like heating and food for as often as possible for her and her siblings because her parents refuse to get, let alone keep jobs. This is all told very effectively through a first person point of view as a memoir, giving the story a greater sense of credibility. If you like books that are honest and raw in the stories they tell, are dark with a dry sense of comedy to them, this book is for you. 1y

In this book Jeanette Walls details stories from her past, living with parents who prefer a not so typical life style. Some of her stories include catching on fire while cooking hot dogs unsupervised as small child, as well as subsequently being broken out of the hospital, falling out the back of a moving car, got stuck in a burning shed, had a homeless man break into her family‘s house, was beat daily at school (one of the few times she (cont)

Montana-Jonassen-Armstrong0 was put in school) all while living with a drunk father and “rebellious” mother. If you like books like Anastasia: the last grand duchess by Carolyn Meyer you will love this book 2y
