I'm at the 42% mark and I am loving this book! It's very political in a way that totally works for me. I had no idea it was such a chunkster when I started it but that just means there's more to love. All those comparisons to The Stand and Station Eleven are justified. There's even a King reference IN the book, love it!

vivastory I got this one for my birthday. I'm really looking forward to it! 2d

Teenagers from Mars | Rick Spears, Rob G.

I need suggestions. I have a sixteen year old daughter and we are going to be starting a reading program at home to supplement her school work. I am looking for books that are definitely not too young for her but I have no objection to ones which might be considered a bit too old for her. Books that will obviously keep her interest. No religious content but spirituality is encouraged. LGBTQ content is a plus. See comments please. . .

Leo1733 I'm looking for books to develop her empathy as well as encourage her to think about bigger issues such as the environment and the future of humanity. Fiction or nonfiction, I'd like to target a bit of both. Thank you all very much!! 2y
buecherwurm When I read your post I had to think of the Carbon Diaries. I'd classify it as a YA environmental novel. I remember loving it as a teenager but I'm honestly not sure at which age I read this. Depending on your expectations it might be too easy. 2y
BookishShelly Octavia Butler‘s Parable of the Sower. It‘s an excellent book with a lot to discuss including the environment. (edited) 2y

awishman Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda 2y
Libby1 Herland and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman for early feminism. Also, The Doll‘s House by Ibsen looks at gender issues. The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. If you think it‘s not too young for her then Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is an excellent one about the Holocaust. My Name is Malala by Malala Youssefzai is amazing. Does she have any particular interests? 2y
buecherwurm If you aim to introducer her to non-american authors I'd recommend The Kite Runner. 2y
buecherwurm And the History of Bees deals with some very contemporary topics. I read this recently so it should be just fine or maybe slighty advanced for your daughters age (I'm 21). 2y
Leo1733 @buecherwurm @Libby1 @BookishShelly @awishman I've read some of these myself but hadn't thought of them for this project, thank you!. The Kite Runner, Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and My Name is Malala are definitely going on the list. I love all Octavia Butler so I'll have to look at that again. These are all excellent suggestions, so many great books! I just want to stuff it all in her brain today. 2y
Blaire Station Eleven is wonderful. Someday this pain will be useful to you. The buffalo creek disaster. A civil action. The sixth extinction. 2y
Blaire Americanah 2y
Blaire The power of one. 2y
RaimeyGallant I agree with @Blaire about Station Eleven. 2y
kgriffith I have recommended this book to people telling them that it is the book I wish I‘d read when I was 16. Intersectional identities, LGBTQ+, and beautiful prose. 2y
TheReadingNurse I read The Secret Life of Bees and The Color Purple around the age of 16. I remember being extremely moved by both books. I also recommend Salt to the Sea, it deals with a teen trying to escape Europe during the Holocaust 14mo

I first read this a few years ago and am now listening to it. The narration is excellent! It's not my favorite Butler but still a good read. It doesn't seem as involved as most of her other stuff, a lighter read perhaps?

I really enjoyed this. While it's true that there was a bit of romance, it was an LGBTQ romance which is a bit more tolerable to me. The story of friendship and life long loyalty, and the picture of life in that particular setting made it worthwhile. Throw in a hint of magic and loveable characters and it's a winner! Also, I'm a sucker for a beautiful cover. I read this on my Kindle but bought a print version for my shelves because it's lovely.

I listened to the audio for this one and enjoyed it very much. The way that it is written lends a certain distance from the characters I thought. Not in a bad way though. Just different. I liked the personal growth of the characters and how it changed their evolving relationship through time and difficulties. I detest most "romance novels" and this had enough going on to tamp that down. Four stars

Lindy I'm starting this in audiobook today. Glad to know you liked it, because I don't care for romance either. 2y
Leo1733 @Lindy I almost skipped it because of the romance aspect but the door concept was too interesting. Luckily, for me the sci-fi was good enough to overshadow the romance and the romance wasn't as awful as it could have been. Some of the ways in which the romance ended were actually quite interesting. 2y

This was between a Pick and So-So. It is a beautiful story and I can see why others would love it. I did enjoy it and learned some about the Alaskan wilderness. It just didn't really move me and I didn't grow really attached to any of the characters. I think that it's really more of a fairy tale and that most fairy tales aren't really my thing. Not the best cropping job but I bailed on both of these. Both were the audible versions. I have guilt and self doubt but I just could not with The Paper Magician. In God's War there were too many characters, all introduced at once. I couldn't keep them all straight and I didn't LIKE any of them. I finished the audio version today and it was very, very good! It is post apocalyptic, which is my favorite genre, but that aspect was barely noticeable. It has strong female characters and friendship, with mystery and adventure. It is dark but I'm okay with that. My one complaint is that if I hear the word "what" in place of that, which, who, whose, etc again, I may scream.

I want to encourage people to continue to write bad reviews! They are honestly just as helpful as positive reviews when deciding what to read. I don't have time to read every book that I want to read or that sounds good.

Sometimes, if I'm on the fence about a book, I will read the one star reviews to see why those people didn't like the book.

EloisaJames That's a great point! As a writer, I find the lesser-star books to be useful (if they're not just mean). I wait around six months until my skin is teflon and then I do learn things. 3y
Leo1733 Often, someone else's reason for not liking a book means that I will most likely enjoy it even more! So please, continue to leave detailed bad reviews! I also encourage authors to not get too discouraged by every bad review! 3y
jpmcwisemorgan I've actually decided to read books because of what has been said in a review that was less than positive. We all have different tastes and what one person didn't like, another might like. Also, I don't tend to trust glowing reviews or the extremely negative ones. I look to see what people in the middle are writing. I do agree that reviews don't have to be mean. 3y
See All 12 Comments
erzascarletbookgasm I think reviews should be honest. Not every book we read happens to be great and we should not shy from saying we didn't like a book or if we abandoned it. Perfectly alright. Not everyone loves/hates the same book, right? As for me, reading a negative review does not make me avoid the book; I judge from reading the blurb and identifying with the author. :) 3y
Lindy I am inserting a plea for details. "It was great" is not enough and neither is "this book is crap." Please give at least one reason. 3y
ReadingSusan @Lindy exactly the more detail the better. Like a lot of people don't like books with horrible or unlikeable MCs and will give it a one star or pan just for that reason. Other people don't mind. 3y
jpmcwisemorgan @Lindy Yes! More detail definitely helps. 3y
Reviewsbylola My friend wrote an Amazon review for a book she got on netgalley and the author tracked her down under her real name (her Amazon UN is not her real name) and sent her a long message basically telling her to delete her review. I was absolutely shocked because I could tell she had put a lot of thought into her review and she very clearly explained why she hated the book. 3y
Weaponxgirl @Reviewsbylola that's so rude! I'd be horrified if someone did that to me. 3y
Reviewsbylola @Weaponxgirl He messed with the wrong girl. She told him exactly what she thought of his message and made sure to let the publisher know via netgalley too. 3y
StaceyKirsch I absolutely do this! I think not enjoying a book you're often not as inspired to share our feelings about it, but try to spare others and be a humanitarian... pass the word. (edited) 3y
Gissy Reviews are to express your opinion about your unique experience with the book, with a particular author. So, it will be a matter of perspective.I think that what matters is how professional and responsible we can write our review, it could be related with plot, characters, writing style, etc. There are bad books that are good books for others @EloisaJames @erzascarletbookgasm @ReadingSusan @jpmcwisemorgan @Reviewsbylola @Weaponxgirl @StaceyKirsch 2y

StaceyKirsch You really should've been an editor or publisher or something other than a nurse. I can't be the only one who thought this. Not t that you aren't a good nurse! 3y

Love, love, loved it! My current favorite book of the year, which is almost over. I listened to the audiobook which I highly recommend. The narrator was wonderful and I read some complaints about the journal font in the reviews. I then bought the book for my shelf, which I do with only my favorites. Strong female protagonist, easily likable. I've preordered the sequel.

Cinfhen I can't wait until the sequel comes out 😀 3y
Smrloomis @Leo1733 yes, the font is terrible 😬 otherwise you're right - it's great! @Cinfhen I might have to pre-order the next one. Unless it's a trilogy in which case I should have waited until they were all out! 3y
Cinfhen Oh god! I'd love a trilogy but I don't think I could wait that long either @Smrloomis (edited) 3y
Leo1733 I didn't realize there was another one coming when I read the first, but now I'm very glad that there is! I'm very excited about it's upcoming release. 🤓 3y

I'm about a third of the way into this one and still not sure about how I feel about it. The first chapter was rough but I'm adjusting to the language now and it's starting to go easier. I think I'm starting to like the main character more.

Chessa Welcome to Litsy! 📚❤ 3y
