A beautiful, meandering corner of escapism. While it takes time getting going, if you're patient you soon find yourself going about your daily business wishing you could run back to McEwan's 1930's world.

His style and language choices allow for subtle nuance between characters in place of character development, which his plot renders unnecessary.

I needed a day or two after this one to regain equilibrium.
