Big Time: A Novel | Ben H. Winters

Mehso-so

Although I enjoyed this novel, and I like reading a story about a hero at the FDA (they do so much to keep us safe), I found the story itself to be a little flimsy. The motives of the bad guy never quite ring true for me. It seems more like a collection of elements and character types mixed together than it does like a cohesive story. I found it fun to read while I was reading, but I don't think this one is going to stick with me.

BarbaraBB Winters is a hit or miss for me 9mo

New Patreon episode just dropped. We discuss many of the books pictured. And, it's audio so you can't see it but the cat stared at me the whole time we were recording.

The Atlantis Gene | A.G. Riddle

3 stars

I had a few problems with this book, but I loved the main character, Kate. Some of the plot points were too easy or too unbelievable. The Atlantis Gene held my attention long enough for me to finish the book, but I won't be continuing with the series.

The Bedford Incident | Mark Rascovich

Pickpick

This is a sturdy novel about a Cold War destroyer captain who plays too close to the edge in games with a Soviet sub. A jaded rapscallion of a press liaison is on hand as the audience surrogate, watching with suspicion as the captain‘s fanatical (and also surprisingly complex) nature is slowly revealed and the crew is amped up to a state of constant tension. Definite Caine Mutiny vibes with a touch of nuclear war…I mean, warning.

After Death | Dean Koontz

Pickpick

I haven't read Koontz in several years, though he's been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. Pulled this one from the stacks at the library recently, and dove in head first without any idea what it would be about. It was bizarre, but it was really good too. To that point, I'm not sure I've ever really read anything by him that wasn't.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Edited to add: The banter between Aleem and Kuba was amazing!!!
