Draw the Line | Kathryn Otoshi

I really enjoyed this book. The illustrations Kathryn Otoshi created show a beautiful story of friendship, hardship, and healing. The background is colored with textured purples and yellows to create a dreamlike setting, but the gap that separates the boys is dark and gloomy. The illustrations also allow you to feel the emotions each of them are feeling as the go through different phases of their friendship.

Pickpick

This wordless picture book follows two boys as they discovered that the lines they had each drawn could be connected. They enjoyed playing together with their connected line, but the two get caught in an angry tug of war that results in a gap being split between them. We see the boys making up and filling in the space between them. Kathryn Otoshi uses black and white illustrations of the boys on top of a lightly textured colored background.

I thought it was interesting that the line began as pencil markings and then it turns into a string which becomes a large cliff that divides them, then turns back into pencil marks that they wipe away.

Mehso-so

This book tells the story through illustrations, and does not have any words. It focuses on a line the goes between 2 boys. They are playing and get upset with each other and the line divides them apart and comes between them. Eventually they are okay and begin to erase the line that was dividing them and they continue to play together.

The use of color in this book helps the reader understand the emotions of the two boys throughout the story. For example, when the boys are having fun the color around them is yellow, but when the get upset the color becomes purple and eventually very dark.

Using the color purple and yellow in this book was a very good way to display darkness and light.

Pickpick

This book showed an abundant amount of emotions without even using words. This book is good to do in class for discussions on feelings.
