Amazing story of a young woman and a tree. Julia Butterfly spent more than 700 days in Luna to save it from the logging industry. She peacefully fought big business and violent loggers at times. Over her time in Luna, she had visits from celebrities building publicity to the tree. Some of her colleagues in protest lost their lives, while Julia stayed in the tree as long as it took, until it was guaranteed it would not be cut.

Scochrane26 I‘ve had this book for many years but haven‘t reread in so long. Thought it had been forgotten! My roommate at the time read it for a class & told me to read it. I sometimes wonder if the tree is still standing & what she‘s doing now. (edited) 2mo
Cosmos_Moon @Scochrane26 I wondered when I was reading this so had to do some googling… she is still an activist and Luna is still there! She has not done another 2 year tree sit, though. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luna_(tree)#:~:text=Luna%20is.... (edited) 2mo
Scochrane26 @Cosmos_Moon Thanks for the info! 2mo

I really liked this. It‘s a mix of biographies of each of the main people, as well as information about the trees and forests and – until the late 80s – no one had been up to the tallest reaches of these trees. There are ecosystems that live high up in the trees, and it‘s tricky to know how to "safely" climb the trees. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin The author himself learnec to do it and joined the scientists on their adventures in the trees. He even went climbing with his kids. I really liked this – all parts of the book: I like biographies, and I like (popular) science, so I enjoyed all of it. 4mo
Bluebird Sounds great! Stacked! Ack! It‘s Jan 1 and I‘m already adding to my TBR list. So much for that resolution of trying to read down the TBR list instead increasing it. 4mo
LibraryCin @Bluebird lol! I hope you like it 4mo

I have had this book in my collection for ages and in my recent reading slump something drew me to it. This memoir by an environmental activist was a perfect slump buster, the fascinating story and conversational tone kept me invested. Hill lived on a small platform 200ft up in an ancient redwood for 2 years to protest deforestation. Full of hope and compassion even as she is met with greed, cruelty, ignorance, and indifference. An inspiring read.

Graywacke Book and story sound terrific. And yay for getting out of a reading slump. Also your cute kitty looks a little tired. 🙂 1y
everlocalwest @Graywacke definitely worth the read! And yes, Lil' Bit has a cold and is in need of all the snuggles. He's sleepy, congested, and always ready to sneeze right in my face. 🙃 1y
everlocalwest @RaeLovesToRead He's a most perfect reading buddy. 💙😺 1y

This was slow, and gave me slight Grapes of Wrath vibes. It felt like a modern classic with some archetypal soul-searching, and ending irony. I would recommend it for someone who likes classic novels like Steinbeck or Dickens.

My bedroom book was left at my parents' house and now my car book (AKA lunch break book) is in my bedroom and my whole life is out of whack.

Johanna414 Your life may be out of whack, but I feel better knowing I'm not the only one who has multiple booms for different points throughout the day. My husband thinks I'm crazy... 3y
Jennaree3 @Johanna414 😅 just don't get 'em mixed up then it's chaos! 3y

I liked this, but it was a depressing story. But as with all of Chevalier‘s novels, it was well-written and good historical fiction.

I loved this book so much I had to buy myself a copy! Such a deep story with more then one story line, there are some major ups and downs in the characters lives, joy and grief. This book is a hidden gem!
